Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Mr Smith is currently undergoing his expert witness training. Mr Smith is registered with Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He is happy to be instructed by Claimant and Defendant law firms in both personal injury and clinical negligence cases. Mr Smith is happy to conduct home visits and can produce reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Smith began his basic surgical training in the Mersey Deanery in 2002, continuing his higher surgical training across the Northwest hospitals including, the Stepping Hill Hospital, University Hospital South Manchester, Royal Oldham Hospital, and the Manchester Royal Infirmary, undertaking his laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 2011. Mr Smith gained his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and entry onto the Specialist Register in January 2012.

Mr Smith secured a position as a Locum Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon in October 2011 at the Stepping Hill Hospital before moving to the Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Trust in January 2012 as a Locum Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon. Shortly after, in December 2012, Mr Smith was appointed post as a substantive Colorectal & General Surgeon and Clinical Lead for Colorectal Cancer Services at the Royal Bolton hospital NHS Trust, a post which he continues to hold.

Mr Smith is competent in endoscopy, has achieved Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG) certification as a trainee, and has completed the Basic Skills in Colonoscopy course. As a Consultant, Mr Smith has performed over 5000 Colonoscopies with a caecal intubation rate of >95%.

During his LAPCO© recognised Laparoscopic Colorectal Fellowship, he performed 44 resections and gained experience in:
• Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair;
• Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (VMR);
• Trans-anal haemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD); and
• Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS).

Mr Smith undertakes between 350 – 500 colonoscopy procedures each year and, since becoming Consultant, he has performed over 500 elective colorectal resections for malignant disease without any anastomotic leaks (>50% performed laparoscopically).

Clinical Interests

Mr Smith has special interest in the management of benign and malignant rectal lesions, with special interest in laparoscopic and minimally-invasive procedures. He has introduced the new and innovative trans-anal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) procedure, using a SILS™-type trans-anal port, using this method in over 150 procedures so far. Mr Smith has a wealth of competencies, with specific clinical interest in:
• Management of non-variceal upper gastro-intestinal (GI) bleeding;
• Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube insertion;
• Colonoscopic polypectomy;
• Banding of haemorrhoids;
• Argon beam photocoagulation;
• Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for colonic polyps.

Management Experience

During Mr Smith’s BSc Honours degree in Biochemistry, he undertook a laboratory-based research project on the effects of diadenosine polyphosphates on renal gluconeogenesis. The work was combined with similar projects and published in the Biochemical Journal. Mr Smith contributed to ongoing research projects in Transplant Surgery and has been involved in numerous clinical audits and clinic-based projects. Mr Smith holds a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate and is actively involved in departmental research. He is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) of two current national studies.

Summary of Publications

Mr Smith has published four papers and four abstracts across a variety of world-renowned journals on topics such as stenting in large bowel obstruction, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and faecal diversion. Mr Smith has also presented at a variety of international, national, and regional meetings, including: European Paediatric Surgeons Association (EUPSA), Poland, June 2005. Teaching & Training

Mr Smith is a registered Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG) Endoscopy Trainer, having completed the Training the Trainer course. Mr Smith has contributed to a several educational events including the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS) Examination n September 2008, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) examiner in July 2009, and Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) Viva Course examiner in September 2006. He was also a Problem Based Learning (PBL) Tutor at the University Hospital of South Manchester where he guided third year medical students between February 2008 and June 2009. In October 2005, Mr Smith was a Contributory Question Author to Pastest© Online multiple choice questions (MCQ) & extended matching questions (EMQ).
