Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Mr Young is undergoing his expert witness training. He is happy to be instructed by Claimant and Defendant law firms in both personal injury and clinical negligence cases. He is registered with APIL, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. Mr Young is happy to conduct home and prison visits and can produce reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Young graduated as a research prize winner from the University of Cambridge and University of Oxford. Initially, his urology training focussed on clinical and scientific research in treatments for prostate cancer at the Cancer Research Institute for Cancer Studies at the University of Birmingham; leading to receiving the highest research degree of PhD in 2003. He went on complete general urology training in the West Midlands and trained as an Endourology Fellow at the renowned Institute of Urology, Bristol. Since 2008, Mr Young has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). He is a Lead Urologist for stone disease and minimally invasive surgery at the Manchester Stone Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.

Clinical Interests

Mr Young treats patients with all general urological problems. He has a subspecialist interest in endourology and minimally invasive surgical treatments, in particular kidney stone disease and minimally invasive treatment of upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma. He runs a general diagnostic service incorporating haematuria clinics & regularly performs transrectal & transperineal prostate biopsies. He also sees patients with general urology problems including andrology, bladder cancer, endourology, erectile dysfunction, sexual dysfunction; prostate disease and urinary tract disorders. He is a core member of the urology specialist cancer MDT.

Research Interests

Mr Young is currently appointed as a Principal Investigator and Supervisor for a number of research trials including the UK PUrE clinical trial (clinical and cost effectiveness of surgical interventions for stones in the lower pole calyx of the kidney); basic research into urinary stone disease and projects relating to stone disease in cystic fibrosis patients. Previously, Mr Young held the role of Principal Investigator for UK multi centre SUSPEND and TISU clinical trials at Wythenshawe Hospital.

In addition, he is an Educational Supervisor for FY1 & Year 5 medical students and a Clinical Supervisor for Core Trainee, Specialist Trainees, & Year 3 medical students.

1989: Welcome Vacation Scholarship, Department of Virology, Cambridge University; awarded for biomedical research.

1990: Professor Peter Wildy Memorial Prize, Cambridge University; awarded for best Pathology finals research project.
