Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Miss Watson has a PGD in Medical Law and has completed Expert Witness courses, most recently in March 2021. Miss Watson is happy to be instructed by Claimant and Defendant law firms for clinical negligence cases and she is quickly building a large portfolio of cases she has opined on. She can produce reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Since 2008, Miss Lesley Watson has enjoyed working as a full-time Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Wythenshawe Hospital where she delivers rapid assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to adults and children with major/life-threatening illnesses/injuries. Miss Watson is particularly special as she has a dual qualification in general and paediatric emergency medicine. She enjoys her role as Safeguarding Lead for adults and children within the Emergency Department, and has a special interest in the management of mental health patients, particularly by the application of the Mental Capacity Act. Miss Watson has expertise in the recognition and management of the acute setting for the conditions listed under her “Areas of expertise”, and undertakes procedures on adults and children requiring conscious sedation.

Clinical Interests

In addition to treating adults and children with major/life-threatening illnesses/injuries, Miss Watson spends a significant amount of her time supervising and assisting more junior clinicians with their patients, guiding them with the more challenging diagnostic dilemmas. Miss Watson has a particular clinical interest in rapid assessment so much so she introduced the process of rapid assessment to the Wythenshawe Hospital which ensures that time critical conditions are identified and treatment initiated, as soon as possible, as well as providing early imaging, investigation and analgesia.

Management Experience

Between 2008-2011, Miss Watson was the Paediatric Emergency Medicine Lead. During her time in this post, she collaborated with the inpatient paediatric and safeguarding teams to develop the department. Between 2010-2017, Miss Watson acted as Speciality Lead for Emergency Medicine, which involved Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) cooperation, including the Manchester Trauma Network (2012-2015) and the NHS Improvement (NHSI) to increase patient experience/satisfaction. Most recently, Miss Watson has taken on a variety of roles including Deputy Medical Director for the Division of Medicine, Lead for the Clinical Standards Group for Medicine at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, as well as Clinical Governance and QIP & Audit Lead for the Emergency Department.

Teaching & Training

Miss Watson currently teaches registrars, in the North West region, on medico-legal dilemmas that often present in emergency medicine. She also takes part in weekly departmental training sessions for junior doctors. Miss Watson has covered subjects ranging from current governance issues, mental capacity, mental health acts and paediatric pitfalls. Further, Miss Watson also provides clinical educator shifts, which are crucial in helping other clinicians with their clinical cases. Miss Watson supervisors and mentors a number of trainees, from FY2 through to ST7, and a Physician Associate. She has mentored a number of advanced nurse practitioners through their training and through their non-medical prescribing qualifications.
