Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Clayton has been providing medico-legal advice for a number of years. He has undergone his expert witness training. He is registered with APIL, AvMA, National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. Dr Clayton enjoys a full medico-legal practice representing both Claimant and Defendant law firms in actions relating to personal injury and clinical negligence. Dr Clayton holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 70/30 and he can usually turnaround reports within 6-8 weeks.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Clayton qualified in medicine at Leeds University Medical School in 1990. Since 2003, he has practiced as a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncologist at St Mary’s Hospital and Christie Hospital, Manchester. He was a founding member of the endometriosis centre at St Mary’s Hospital.  He is currently Clinical Lead for Gynaecological Oncology at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In addition, Dr Clayton is Lead for Gynaecological Cancer on the National Clinical Reference Group and current Chair of the working party for NHS England, developing the national gynaecological oncology commissioning specification.

Clinical Interests

Dr Clayton has a variety of clinical interests in gynaecological oncology: ovarian, endometrial, cervical and vulvar cancer (subspecialty accredited). Further interests include laparoscopic surgery, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, colposcopy for abnormal smears (BSCCP accredited), vulvar problems, menstrual problems, hysteroscopy, post-menopausal bleeding, general gynaecology and prophylactic surgery for familial ovarian / endometrial cancer.

Research Interests

Dr Clayton studied potential novel treatments for endometriosis as his research degree (MD). During this time, he was trained to an advanced level in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. He has published widely in the field of gynaecological oncology.

Summary of Publications

He has authored multiple research publications and book chapters, including several in the field of gynaecological oncology, endometriosis and laparoscopic surgery.

Teaching & Training

Dr Clayton undertook fellowship training in Australia in laparoscopic surgery and gynaecological oncology. Having undertaken the Barts and the Royal Marsden training programme in London, he was sub-speciality accredited as a Gynaecological Oncologist. At present, he is a training programme supervisor for Manchester subspecialty training programme in gynaecological oncology.
