Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Iyer has been acting as an expert witness for a number of years and has written numerous reports for inquest, particularly in the context of asbestos causation. He is registered with APIL, AVmA, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester but is happy to travel in order to conduct home and prison visits. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 90/10 and he can usually turnaround reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Iyer is a senior consultant in Respiratory & Sleep Medicine at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has a leading role within the department in Sleep & Non-Invasive Ventilation. In addition, he is a Senior Lung Cancer Clinician and leads the Cancer Intervention Service in Sheffield. His current job plan includes a heavy general respiratory workload, specialist sleep & ventilation clinic, and a dedicated cancer intervention session. He has led on several important initiatives within the trust, including covid-related service delivery, workforce development, and junior doctor training.

Prior to this, he has had a diverse consultant career occupying a number of senior roles. He was the Clinical Director for Medicine at the East Cheshire NHS Trust. He set up the advanced bronchoscopy, medical thoracoscopy, and diagnostic & therapeutic sleep services in East Cheshire. He chaired the South Manchester lung cancer MDT for several years before moving to Vancouver where he was a visiting consultant at the world-renowned University of British Columbia Hospital.

He has considerable experience of lung cancer, pleural disease, polysomnography, and complex respiratory & non-respiratory sleep disorders.

Clinical Interests

Although Dr Iyer’s practice is wide-ranging, he has a particular interest in sleep & ventilation, lung cancer intervention, and pleural disease. In the private sector, he leads a team of sleep physicians, physiologists, and dentists, providing sleep apnoea treatment throughout the UK. He has consulted for the Welsh Rugby Union and the British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Research Interests

Dr Iyer is currently the Chief and Principal Investigator for several multi-centre research studies. His team have recently been awarded a substantial research grant for an important sleep apnoea study. He has also been a co-investigator in several national and international studies, including the well-known covid-19 study called RECOVERY.

Summary of Publications

Dr Iyer has published extensively in several areas such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pleural disease, lung cancer, sleep and pneumonia.

Teaching & Training

Dr Iyer occupies a number of senior roles in education. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, a Royal College of Physicians Accredited Clinical and Educational Supervisor, and a Royal College of Radiology Accredited Level 1 Trainer in thoracic ultrasound. He is currently the Training Programme Director for Respiratory Medicine in South Yorkshire and previously occupied a similar role in Liverpool.He has extensive experience in teaching and regularly supervises junior doctors, specialist trainees, nurses, and pharmacists. He is a qualified appraiser and a mentor for several consultant colleagues. He is a trained NCAS case investigator. He is a regular panellist for consultant and national trainee interviews.
