Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Mahesh has undergone his expert witness training . He is registered with APIL, National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. Dr Mahesh enjoys a full medico-legal practice representing both Claimant and Defendant law firms in actions relating to personal injury and clinical negligence. He holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester but is happy to travel in order to conduct home and prison visits. He can produce reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Following his initial training in general internal medicine, Dr Mahesh subsequently trained in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He gained extensive experience in various hospitals in England and Wales, including liver transplant tertiary university hospitals and district general hospitals. Dr Mahesh was given the opportunity to develop his knowledge further during an advanced interventional endoscopy fellowship in Australia.

Dr Mahesh’s initial years as a consultant were at Blackpool Victoria hospital (2012-2019) and, he was appointed as a Consultant Physician & Gastroenterologist at the Blackburn Royal hospital in 2019; part of the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He also holds the position of honorary Consultant Physician & Gastroenterologist at the Royal Preston Hospital; part of the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In addition, Dr Mahesh is the Lead Clinician for nutritional related issues in the hospital and provides therapeutic endoscopy for the Lancashire and South Cumbria cancer alliance. Currently, he is Lead for the Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Rapid Diagnostic Centre for his trust.

Clinical Interests

Dr Mahesh has a clinical interest in dyspepsia (gastric and duodenal ulcer, reflux), Barrett’s Oesophagus, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s and Colitis, gastrointestinal cancer, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and malnutrition including complex gastrointestinal issues, obesity and malabsorption.

Research Interests

Dr Mahesh has been actively involved in clinical research throughout his training years and then as a consultant, both as principal and sub-investigator. His areas of interest are in endoscopy and nutritional interventions. These works have been published in peer review journals and presented at national and international meetings.Dr Mahesh has been the lead researcher and senior author of over 10 research projects since 2012. Most recently, as the Chief Investigator for 'Fiducial marker insertion in image guided radiotherapy for oesophageal cancers', he received a grant of £25,000 from Rosemere Cancer Centre. He continues to contribute as a sub-investigator in several national and international endoscopic ultrasound related studies.

Summary of Publications

To date, Dr Mahesh has co-authored in 28 publications with 6 full papers and many abstracts, and presented in national and international meetings; all leading to significant changes in practice.

Teaching & Training

Nationally, Dr Mahesh is the Education and Media Co-ordinator for UK and Ireland EUS Society and the Quality Improvement Lead for endoscopic ultrasound for the British Society of Gastroenterology/Joint Advisory Group. Currently, he is the Medical Performance Assessor for the General Medical Council; completing reports for investigations and attending hearings. Previously, he was the Associate Director of Medical Education, a Royal College Tutor and TSTL for Medicine and an International Medical Doctors Tutor at Blackpool.
