Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Marcus Lyall is a Consultant Physician specialising in internal medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, and has been based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for the past seven years. This large tertiary referral and teaching hospital sees a diverse range of patients, and Dr Lyall is experienced in the management of broad and often unscheduled acute medical presentations.

Beyond general medical care, Dr Lyall maintains specialty clinics within both the National Health Service and private practice, focusing on comprehensive diabetes care, general endocrinology, and the management of thyroid cancer. Demonstrating leadership in the field, Dr Lyall also chairs the regional multidisciplinary team dedicated to endocrine cancer, coordinating care and contributing to best practice across the region.

Dr Lyall maintains a broad range of clinical interests within the field of internal medicine and endocrinology. Within endocrinology, Dr Lyall has particular expertise in diabetes care, including a strong interest in the application of diabetes technology to optimise patient management. They are also keenly focused on the specific challenges of diabetes in conjunction with steroid use, and the prevention and management of associated complications.

Dr Lyall is experienced in managing a broad range of acute unscheduled medical presentations, including Addison’s disease, and specialises in the management of thyroid cancer and other adrenal tumours.

He is also keenly focussed on several key areas within medicine and endocrinology. These include advancements in diabetes therapeutics, the investigation of thyroid cancer, the optimisation of care within unscheduled general medical presentations, and the evolving role of diabetes technology in patient management.

Management Experience

Dr Lyall demonstrates significant leadership and management experience within NHS Lothian, currently serving as the Clinical Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology services, overseeing care for a patient population exceeding eight hundred thousand people. Beyond direct clinical leadership, Dr Lyall actively contributes to the development of regional best practice. They are the lead author of a range of important guidance documents covering key endocrine presentations, including diabetic foot disease, advancements in diabetes therapeutics, and crucial aspects of steroid safety. Further demonstrating their commitment to collaborative care, Dr Lyall leads the regional multidisciplinary team dedicated to the management of thyroid and adrenal cancer, fostering a coordinated approach to complex patient cases.

Summary of Publications

Dr Lyall has established a strong publication record over the past decade, contributing original research across a diverse range of clinical areas. This includes significant contributions to the understanding and management of metabolic liver disease, diabetes epidemiology, the application of diabetes technology, the challenges of multimorbidity, diabetic foot complications, steroid-induced diabetes, and endocrine cancer.

Dr Lyall is committed to medical education and training, holding the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.
