Ms Laws is available for instruction by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.
Clinical Practice & Experience
Throughout a two-decade career, Ms Laws has developed a robust foundation in midwifery care. Beginning in 2005 atWorcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, she progressed from Band 5 to Band 6 Registered Midwife, gaining experience across all areas of the specialty, including community. In 2007, she undertook a professional development opportunity working as a Midwife at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Upon returning to the UK, she continued in a Band 6 role at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals via NHS Professionals until 2014. Since 2015, she has maintained her clinical skills and flexibility as a Band 6 Agency Midwife with Kernowflex and the Royal Cornwall HospitalsNHS Trust, alongside independent agency work. Most recently, in 2024, she transitioned to a Band 8 SpecialistAssurance Associate role at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, utilising her extensive clinical background to focus on assurance and quality improvement within maternity services.
Clinical Interests
Ms Laws has developed her expertise in several key areas of midwifery care. These include comprehensive antenatal assessment, with a particular focus on the detection of small for gestational age (SGA) babies and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). She possesses a keen interest in managing complex labour scenarios, and a deep understanding of the sensitive issues surrounding intrauterine death (IUD), stillbirth and neonatal death, alongside a focus on comprehensive intrapartum care and the recognition and management of perineal injuries. Finally, she maintains a deep understanding of the factors contributing to hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
Management Experience
From 2019 to 2023, Ms Laws served as Associate Director at MedBrief Services Ltd, where she was responsible for recruiting, training, and managing a clinical team of over 30 professionals. Her role involved preparing clinical chronologies and screening reviews, as well as managing client relationships and supporting business development. She currently holds the position of Director at Medico-legal Midwives Ltd, where she oversees the recruitment and management of expert midwives, prepares chronologies, screening reviews, Part 35 reports, and Coroner reports, as well as delivering solicitor training in birth injury claims.
Teaching & Training
Beyond clinical practice, Ms Laws demonstrates a commitment to education and training. She serves as a Medico-legalAdvisor for the AvMA Helpline, providing expert advice on medico-legal matters. Further showcasing her dedication toimproving outcomes, she is a qualified Baby Lifeline Trainer, delivering crucial training in Childbirth Emergencies in theCommunity. Ms Laws also extends her
expertise to the legal profession, providing specialist training to solicitors on the complexities of birth injury claims, bridging the gap between clinical knowledge and legal understanding.
