Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Mr Gerald Collins enjoys receiving instructions from both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Gerald Collins has been a consultant urological surgeon for more than 29 years, delivering specialist care across Manchester, Macclesfield and Cheshire. Since 1997 he has operated from The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Spire Manchester Hospital and Spire Regency Hospital in  where he concentrates on urological oncology, with a particular emphasis on prostate cancer diagnostics, PSA and free PSA interpretation, and advanced imaging. He has introduced a dedicated bone health optimisation programme for men commencing or receiving androgen deprivation therapy, filling a previously unmet need in prostate cancer survivorship. His clinical repertoire also includes prostate biopsy techniques, management of haematuria, stone disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and he routinely employs prostate MRI and the Stockholm3 risk calculator to refine diagnostic pathways.

During a parallel 27 year tenure with the NHS at Stepping Hill Hospital, Mr Collins served as a lead consultant, providing both general and subspecialty urological services to the Greater Manchester population. He oversaw the delivery of acute urological care, coordinated multidisciplinary prostate cancer clinics, and guided the implementation of service wide protocols that improved patient outcomes and streamlined referral pathways. His NHS role also encompassed regional research leadership, where he contributed to the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Research Network and helped shape the strategic direction of urological oncology services across the trust.

Clinical Interests

Mr Collins concentrates on prostate disease across the full spectrum of care. He is an authority on PSA and free‑PSA interpretation and routinely incorporates the Stockholm3 risk calculator and prostate‑MRI into diagnostic pathways to improve cancer detection while limiting unnecessary biopsies.

His broader urological portfolio includes haematuria evaluation, stone disease management, BPH assessment, prostatitis treatment, and the management of advanced prostate cancer, ensuring comprehensive care for patients with both benign and malignant conditions.

Research Interests

Mr Collins’ research trajectory began with an MD thesis conducted jointly at Edinburgh University and the Mayo Clinic, which characterised the community prevalence and natural history of BPH and earned him his doctorate in 1993. Since then he has sustained an active publication record, focusing on prostate cancer diagnostics, the clinical utility of the Stockholm3 risk calculator, and the impact of androgen deprivation therapy on skeletal integrity. He routinely presents his findings at national and international conferences, and he collaborates with academic centres to evaluate novel biomarkers and imaging modalities that may further personalise prostate cancer care.

Management Experience

Throughout his NHS career, Mr Collins has held senior leadership positions, steering clinical service development and research initiatives within the urology department. He chaired the urological oncology research programme for the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Research Network, securing funding and fostering collaborations with academic institutions. In the private sector, he has managed multidisciplinary prostate cancer clinics, coordinated with oncologists, radiologists and physiotherapists, and overseen the operational rollout of the bone health optimisation programme. His editorial role as European Editor for The Prostate Journal further demonstrates his capacity to guide scholarly discourse and maintain rigorous peer review standards across the continent.
