Ms Jane Halliday

Ms Jane Halliday has been a full‑time practising consultant neurosurgeon since August 2018. After completing her training and an anterior skull‑base/pituitary fellowship (2010‑2018), she served as a consultant in Oxford before joining the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust at Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester, in 2023.

In her current post she performs roughly 200 adult neurosurgical operations each year and sees about 500 out‑patients, while covering a full adult on‑call rota. Her on-call work centres on management of patients with acute cranial emergencies, such as head injury, intracranial haemorrhage, intracranial tumours with mass effect, pituitary apoplexy, stroke‑related neurosurgical emergencies, hydrocephalus, primary and post‑operative intracranial infection. Ms Halliday’s subspecialty work focuses on skull‑base and pituitary pathology, with a particular expertise in endoscopic skull base work. She treats intracranial meningiomas, schwannomas, pituitary tumours, Rathke‑cleft cysts, trigeminal neuralgia and hemi-facial spasm, benign developmental lesions (dermoid/epidermoid and arachnoid cysts), fibrous dysplasia, and manages patients with Neuro‑Fibromatosis Type 2‑related schwannomatosis (NF2‑SWN). She is co‑lead of the Manchester service. She participates in weekly NF2‑SWN MDT and clinics, and fortnightly pituitary & skull‑base MDTs. She also holds several leadership posts: Deputy Clinical Director for Neurosurgery, Spine and Pain; Clinical Lead for the Pituitary Surgery Team; Clinical Lead for Neurosurgical Trauma; and Co‑lead for the Manchester NF2‑SWN team.

Ms Halliday’s covers all aspects of cranial neurosurgery through her on call and general neurosurgical practice. Her subspecialty focus lies in skull‑base and pituitary pathology. She routinely treats intracranial meningiomas, schwannomas, pituitary adenomas, Rathke’s cleft cysts, patients with trigeminal neuralgia or hemifacial spasm benign developmental lesions, dermoid/epidermoid and arachnoid cysts. Her operative expertise is both open (microscopic) and endoscopic. A particular area of expertise is the management of Neuro‑Fibromatosis Type 2‑related schwannomatosis (NF2‑SWN); she co‑leads the Manchester NF2‑SWN service and runs a weekly dedicated clinic, coordinating multidisciplinary care and contributing to the development of disease‑specific treatment pathways.

Within the division of Neurosurgery, Spine and Pain, Ms Halliday—who holds an M.Sc in Healthcare Leadership—serves as Deputy Clinical Director, providing strategic oversight and supporting service development across the department. She is the clinical lead for the pituitary surgery team, overseeing audit, governance and service development. In her role as clinical lead for the Neurosurgical Trauma service she works closely with the Trauma Service, ensuring that pathways are clearly defined and care for patients with emergency cranial injuries is streamlined and optimised. In addition, she co‑leads the Manchester NF2 SWN team, directing multidisciplinary meetings, audit activities and service‑expansion initiatives.

Ms Halliday has contributed to over 40 original research papers published in peer reviewed journals, available through PubMed.

Ms Halliday is an educational and clinical supervisor in her department. She regularly delivers Neurosurgery training to resident doctors, fellows and nursing colleagues and considers teaching and training at the core of her work.

Ms Halliday has completed Inspire MediLaw’s RCS‑accredited two‑day Expert Witness Training—covering expert evidence, report writing, claim processes, GDPR, breach of duty, causation, consent, CPR Part 35, expert meetings, costs and courtroom skills. The course gives her a solid foundation for medico‑legal practice, enabling her to provide expert witness and litigation‑consultancy services alongside her clinical duties. She enjoys receiving instructions from both claimant and defendant law firms in personal‑injury and clinical‑negligence cases.
