Medico-Legal experience

Mr Muir has been preparing medico-legal reports since 1996. He is happy to be instructed by Claimant and Defendant law firms in both personal injury and clinical negligence cases relating to hand and wrist injury and surgery. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 80/20. He is registered with APIL and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. Mr Muir is happy to conduct home and prison visits and can produce reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

In 1996, Mr Muir was appointed as Consultant Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital, the dedicated major trauma centre for Greater Manchester. Salford Royal Hospital is also one of the major teaching hospitals attached to the University of Manchester Medical School where Mr Muir is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery. Mr Muir underwent extensive specialist hand surgery training. He spent six months in SOS Main Strasbourg; a unit known world-wide for its reputation and pioneering role. The work of the clinic ranges from the routine to the most complex congenital and microvascular cases. Mr Muir also trained as Shoulder Fellow at Wrightington, allowing him to study all aspects of upper limb work with Professor Trail, Professor Stanley and Mr Stilwell. This post allowed him to develop experience in particular in the fields of arthroplasty and arthroscopy, and of rheumatoid hand surgery. Currently, Mr Muir’s elective practice is devoted entirely to hand and upper limb surgery. He has treated professional musicians and national team cricket players. In addition, he has a considerable systemic sclerosis practice.

Clinical Interests

Mr Muir’s clinical interests extend to all aspects of hand and wrist surgery. His clinical practice involves the management of carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve surgery, Dupuytren’s contracture, hand arthritis, wrist fracture, wrist arthritis, finger arthritis; scleroderma, trigger finger and finger fractures.

Research Interests

Mr Muir is active in research. His latest papers are on WALANT hand surgery, management of scaphoid fractures, systemic sclerosis and scapho lunate ligament injury.

Management Experience

Mr Muir has previously been responsible for the acute management of injured patients in all his orthopaedic posts; gaining experience in the conservative and operative management of common fractures. He was also an interface hand fellow at Withington Hospital in Manchester, rotating through Withington Hospital in Manchester, Stockport Infirmary and Wrightington Hospital.

Summary of Publications

Mr Muir has published more than 50 peer reviewed research articles in major journals including The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Hand Surgery, Journal of Trauma and Injury. He reviews scientific papers for the Bone and Joint Journal and for the prestigious Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. In 2019, 2020, and 2021 he was acknowledged as one of CORR's top reviewers; fewer than 5% of reviewers fall into this group.

Teaching & Training

Mr Muir lectures on a regular basis He has lectured on hand surgery and on orthopaedics at. amongst others, John Moores University, Wrightington, Association of Surgeons in Training, Salford Royal, the BSSH Instructional Courses, and on the Pulvertaft Lecture Series. He has given 34 podium presentations in the UK, in Europe and in Australia. He has instructed on wrist and elbow arthroscopy at the Minimal Access Training Unit (MATTU) at The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was chairman of the prestigious British Society for Surgery of the Hand Instructional Courses from 2017-2019. He is trainer for the advanced training post fellows in hand surgery (there are only ten of these in the country, drawing trainees from plastic and orthopaedic backgrounds). He is Chairman of the board of examiners for the European Board of Hand Surgery diploma examination.
