Expert Witness – Mr Malek Racy
Consultant Hand & Wrist Surgeon

Mr Racy accepts instructions from both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury cases.

His clinical expertise is particularly relevant to cases involving traumatic hand and wrist injuries, complex fractures, tendon and ligament damage, peripheral nerve injury and the consequences of reconstructive hand or wrist surgery.

Mr Racy has served as a Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital, part of the Northern Care Alliance, since October 2023. In this role he manages the full spectrum of adult orthoplastic trauma and elective surgery, encompassing both bony and soft tissue repair and reconstruction. His clinical repertoire includes complex fracture fixation, tendon and ligament reconstruction, and microsurgical nerve repair, allowing him to provide comprehensive care for a diverse adult hand wrist population.

His professional journey began with a medical degree from the University of Bristol in 2009, followed by foundation and Core Surgical Training in Birmingham and London. He completed higher surgical training in orthopaedics in South Yorkshire and was awarded a nationally appointed orthoplastic interface hand fellowship in Manchester. This was succeeded by a hand fellowship at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, which he concluded early to assume his current consultant post. Throughout his training, Mr Racy has attended numerous subspecialist courses—including advanced nerve reconstruction and arthroscopy—ensuring he remains at the forefront of evolving surgical techniques.

Mr Racy is proficient in managing virtually all adult hand and wrist pathologies, with the exception of major burn injuries, extensive soft tissue reconstruction that requires free tissue transfer, and sarcoma. His principal clinical interests lie in wrist and small joint arthroscopy, small joint arthroplasty, and peripheral nerve surgery. He has a particular enthusiasm for minimally invasive approaches that preserve function while reducing recovery time.

A further focus of his practice is the development and implementation of patient specific solutions. He leads the malunion deformity correction service at Salford Royal, collaborating closely with biomedical engineers to design and produce custom 3 D printed implants and patient specific instrumentation. This work not only enhances surgical precision but also expands the therapeutic options available to patients with complex deformities.

In his capacity as Hand Lead for the unit, Mr Racy has streamlined the hand and wrist trauma pathway by introducing standardized assessment proformas and operating room protocols. These innovations have improved documentation, heightened patient safety, and reduced theatre delays. He is currently devising a trust wide strategy to replicate this pathway across multiple hospitals. Additionally, he established an image guided joint injection clinic that has generated cost savings of more than £500 per patient for the trust.

Mr Racy’s research activities centre on the integration of three dimensional printing technologies into hand surgery, outcomes of arthroscopic versus open procedures, and the long term functional results of peripheral nerve reconstructions. He collaborates with engineering teams to evaluate the biomechanical performance of custom implants and is actively seeking funding to expand prospective clinical trials in these areas.

Mr Racy has contributed to peer-reviewed clinical, surgical education and simulation research. He co-authored “Osteoarthritis of the fingers” with Lindsay Muir in Orthopaedics and Trauma in 2023. The paper reviewed the assessment and management of finger osteoarthritis, including non-operative treatment, joint fusion and arthroplasty.

His earlier research includes “Development and Validation of a Virtual Reality Haptic Femoral Nailing Simulator”, published in the Journal of Surgical Education in 2021.

He has also contributed to randomised controlled studies examining the teaching of clinical examination to medical students, including research published in BMC Medical Education in 2021 and 2023. In 2025, he was among the authors of research into X-ray simulations with gVXR for education, digital twinning, experiment planning and data analysis.

Mr Racy creates high quality surgical teaching resources by filming, editing, and animating intra operative footage. His videos have been recognised with awards from the British Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He holds a Master’s in Surgical Education from Imperial College London, graduating with distinction, and serves as faculty and organiser for a variety of national and international surgical skills courses and examination workshops. At Salford Royal he previously coordinated the weekly hand teaching programme, and as a trainee he ran the regional registrar teaching programme, local orthopaedic teaching sessions, and journal clubs. He currently supervises two orthopaedic residents and a hand fellow, providing regular mentorship and hands on training.
