Dr Saleem is a Consultant Interventional Neuroradiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust; a position held since September 2017. His clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive, endovascular techniques to treat a range of complex neurovascular conditions.

Dr Saleem is highly experienced in the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms and arterial dissections, utilizing modern devices and techniques. He also performs endovascular procedures for intracranial dural-fistulae and Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs). Dr Saleem has significant expertise in the mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischaemic stroke, as well as angioplasty and stenting of the carotid and vertebral arteries, and venous sinus stenting. His practice extends to include embolisation procedures for intracranial tumours, middle meningeal arteries, and external carotid arteries (nasal/facial).

Dr Saleem’s skills also encompass spinal interventions, including spinal angiography and endovascular treatment of spinal arteriovenous shunts and CSF venous fistulae, alongside vertebral tumour embolisation. He is proficient in the interpretation of both cranial and spinal imaging studies, including CT, MRI, and angiography.

Clinical Interests

Dr Saleem’s clinical interests lie in the field of neurointerventional radiology, with a particular focus on utilising endovascular techniques for the treatment of complex cerebrovascular conditions. He has a strong interest in applying these minimally invasive approaches to brain aneurysms, striving to optimise patient outcomes and quality of life. He is also dedicated to advancing the treatment of stroke and other neurovascular abnormalities through innovative techniques and collaborative research.

Research Interests

Dr Saleem’s research interests center on improving outcomes in neurointerventional radiology. He is actively involved in research evaluating and optimising endovascular techniques for the treatment of brain aneurysms, with a focus on long-term efficacy and minimising complications. His broader research portfolio encompasses investigations into novel approaches to stroke treatment and the application of advanced imaging techniques to improve neurovascular interventions.

Management Experience

Dr Saleem currently serves as the Clinical Lead for the Neuro-intervention Service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. In this role, he provides strategic and operational leadership for the multidisciplinary team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient neurointerventional care. Summary of Publications

Dr Saleem has a robust publication record demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field of neurointerventional radiology. His research focuses on the endovascular treatment of complex cerebrovascular conditions, particularly intracranial aneurysms. Several publications, including work on the use of devices like the Contour (Islim et al., 2025) and Woven Endobridge (Moughal et al., 2024), detail his experience and contribute to the understanding of optimal treatment strategies for wide-neck aneurysms. He has published extensively on techniques such as stent-assisted coiling (Nejadhamzeeigilani et al., 2023; Islim et al., 2024) and intrasaccular treatment approaches (Islim et al., 2023). Beyond aneurysm management, Dr. SX’s publications cover a diverse range of neurovascular topics, including dural arteriovenous fistulae (Kular et al., 2022), hypertensive posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (Moughal et al., 2023), and traumatic brain injury (Currie et al., 2016). His research extends to imaging modalities in vascular neurosurgery (Bautista et al., 2020) and general diagnostic radiology (Vaidyanathan et al., 2016), showcasing a broad understanding of neurovascular disease and its management. A full list of his publications is available upon request.
