Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Lowis has been preparing medico-legal reports since 2015, relating solely to paediatric practice. He enjoys a full medico-legal practice and is instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Stephen Lowis attended Oxford University Medical School where he gained his qualifications in 1979 and 1982, and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne where he gained his PhD in 1996. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2007. Dr Lowis was a Consultant Paediatric and Adolescent Oncologist at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children from 1998, until 2022. He was Lead Clinician for 7 years, and led the neuro-oncology service from 1998 until 2017.

Prior to his role as Consultant Paediatric and Adolescent Oncologist, Dr Lowis had previously been appointed in the following roles:

Clinical Lecturer in Child Health, University of Bristol
Leukaemia Research Fund Fellow and North of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund Clinical Research Fellow, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.

Clinical Interests

Dr Lowis has worked extensively within the field of paediatric oncology, taking a special clinical interest in solid tumours, neuro-oncology, and pharmacology. He has undertaken research and clinical trials that have focused on the development of new drugs to treat tumours in children and adolescents.

Research Interests

Dr Stephen Lowis was Principal Investigator for nine National Cancer Research Institute clinical trials. He was Chief Investigator for two international clinical trials, both of which looked at the treatment of tumours in children. He was part of the Writing Committee and Trial Steering Committee for the first multinational randomized controlled clinical trial for the treatment of children with Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumours.

Summary of Publications

Dr Lowis has published extensively. He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, a textbook of neuro-oncology and numerous chapters featured within books. His publications have included novel research, reviews of current management and/or treatment of tumours, and in-depth case studies of children with cancer. Dr Lowis was previously appointed as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol.
