Clinical Practice & Experience

Ms. Goater qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1992 and has built a diverse career across a wide range of specialties, including gastroenterology, diabetes, respiratory, haematology, and acute general medicine as a Staff Nurse and Ward Sister. Alongside caring for groups of complex acute medical patients, ensuring their safe and effective care by a team of healthcare professionals working together, she was responsible for co-ordinating shifts, providing staff rotas and managing sickness returns and absence. Since 2007, Ms Goater has worked in the role of Nutrition Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) assessing and managing the care of surgical and medical patients requiring artificial nutrition support. She has also been responsible for managing a large cohort of patients in the community with artificial nutrition support requirements, from assessment to provision of appropriate device, to discharge.

Ms Goater has played a key role in creating policies and guidelines for nutrition screening, naso-gastric insertion/care, parenteral nutrition and refeeding, thus promoting safe care and preventing injury. Since 2010, Ms Goater has had a dual role, in addition to the Nutrition CNS role she has worked as an Upper Gastrointestinal clinical Nurse Specialist. She has provided a supportive role for patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers, ensuring that they have a voice at multi-disciplinary meetings by initiating a best-timed pathway clinic, from diagnosis through to hand over to specialist treatment or palliative community support. She has worked collaboratively with the Greater Manchester Oesophageal cancer network in improving pathways from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.

Clinical Interests

Ms Goater has been involved in national audits with the National Nutrition Nurses Group and presented to peers at national conference. She has supported the hospital practice educator facilitators with current up to date evidence base for nutrition screening workshops, in a bid to improving general nutrition care for in-patients. Thus, enabling ward staff to understand the importance of correct, timely, screening, documentation and assessment of patients.

She is also passionate about meeting the complex requirements for patients whose lives depend on artificial nutrition support.

Ms Goater has completed: Research in Evidence Based Practice, at Diploma level. 2008, Preparation for Mentorship, at Degree level. 2009, Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy insertion, at Liverpool School of Endoscopy 2010, Advanced Communication Skills, at the Christie Hospital. 2014, Clinical Examination Skills, at Masters level. 2016, Advanced Life Support, 2022, Ruth Strauss – No conversation is too difficult. 2024, Ms Goater regularly attends conferences and study days to keep herself abreast of current and future improvements in her chosen career.
