A highly experienced Consultant in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and Rehabilitation Medicine, Dr Dahab brings considerable expertise in complex neurorehabilitation, spasticity management, and medico-legal reporting.

A Recognised Leader in Spinal Cord Injury and Rehabilitation

Dr Raef Dahab has served as a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine at Salford Royal Hospital since 2018, where he leads the regional Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and Intrathecal Baclofen services. He has played a pivotal role in establishing multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics for SCI and Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), significantly enhancing patient access to specialist care.

Trained in the UK following his qualification in Sudan in 2002, Dr Dahab completed specialist training in Rehabilitation Medicine in the North West of England, with a focus on spinal cord injury. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate and a Master’s degree in Medical Leadership and Management.

Dr Dahab’s clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of spinal cord injury management, from acute inpatient rehabilitation to long-term community-based care. He has particular expertise in:

  • Complex spasticity management, including intrathecal Baclofen therapy
  • Rehabilitation following major trauma
  • Management of cauda equina syndrome
  • Functional recovery and community reintegration
  • Multidisciplinary rehabilitation goal-setting

His comprehensive knowledge of SCI medicine enables him to provide expert care for individuals with both complete and incomplete injuries, supporting improved outcomes and quality of life.

Leadership and Service Development

In addition to his clinical roles, Dr Dahab has made significant contributions to healthcare leadership. He currently serves as Director of the Locally Employed Doctors (LED) Programme at his Trust, overseeing the development and retention of over 400 doctors. His leadership in regional SCI services underscores his commitment to advancing clinical care and service innovation.

Academic Contributions and Teaching

From 2022 to 2024, Dr Dahab served as a Senior Lecturer in Postgraduate Medical Education at Edge Hill University Medical School. He continues to play an active role in clinical education through his position as Director of the LED Programme and his work in postgraduate medical education.

Dr Dahab has published in a range of peer-reviewed journals, contributing to research in neurosurgery, trauma rehabilitation, orthopaedics, and infection control. His work includes case reports, observational studies, and national surveys on topics such as:
