McCollum Consultants Welcomes Mr Paul Sutton, Specialist in Complex Colorectal and Pelvic Oncology Surgery

McCollum Consultants is pleased to welcome Mr Paul Sutton to our growing network of expert witnesses. Mr Sutton is a highly accomplished Consultant Colorectal, Pelvic, and Peritoneal Surgeon, with an extensive background in complex oncological surgery, surgical innovation, and academic leadership.

A Leader in Colorectal and Pelvic Malignancy Surgery

Mr Sutton holds appointments at The Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and HCA Healthcare UK (The Christie Private Care and The Wilmslow Hospital). He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Division of Cancer Sciences at the University of Manchester and serves as an Editor for the British Journal of Surgery.

He is widely recognised for his expertise in high-complexity colorectal cancer surgery, having introduced advanced techniques for pelvic exenteration at The Christie. His practice includes management of peritoneal surface malignancies, appendiceal tumours, and advanced pelvic cancers. A fully accredited JAG endoscopist, Mr Sutton also leads endoscopy training within his Trust and is experienced in robotic and minimally invasive techniques.

Fellowships, Research, and Academic Contribution

Following completion of his surgical training in 2019, Mr Sutton undertook a dedicated two-year post-CCT fellowship in advanced colorectal and peritoneal surface malignancy, complemented by the EBSQ in Surgical Oncology and the ESSO Fellowship. He has authored over 100 publications and contributed to multiple book chapters in the field.

His current research explores genomic and immune profiling in rectal cancer, artificial intelligence in colorectal metastases, and the use of circulating tumour DNA. He collaborates with national leaders across multiple projects and continues to contribute to transformative clinical trials.

Recognised Speaker and Contributor to National Surgical Development

A regular speaker at national and international conferences, Mr Sutton has delivered invited lectures for leading organisations, including the Royal College of Surgeons and ACPGBI. He sits on the Advanced Pelvic Malignancy Subcommittee of the ACPGBI and is a steering group member of the PELVEX Collaborative.

Medico-Legal and Expert Witness Services

Mr Sutton holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate in Civil Law. He provides independent expert witness services for both civil and criminal proceedings. His medico-legal expertise covers:

  • Surgical management of colorectal, appendiceal, and peritoneal tumours
  • Complex pelvic malignancy of non-colorectal origin
  • Complex benign intra-abdominal conditions
  • Endoscopic procedures and complications

He has experience giving evidence in both Crown Court and Coroners Court and regularly updates his medico-legal CPD through national training events.
