A BBC report has recognised the work of Dr Eleni Tholouli, Consultant Haematologist and Haemato-Oncologist, following the first adult NHS patient with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-cell ALL) receiving a new form of CAR-T therapy.
Oscar Murphy received treatment at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where Dr Tholouli directs the Adult Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular/Gene Therapy Unit. The therapy represents a significant advance for adults with aggressive B-cell ALL whose disease has relapsed or not responded to standard treatment.
CAR-T therapy is a highly personalised form of immunotherapy, using a patient’s own genetically modified T-cells to recognise and destroy cancer cells. Clinical trial data has demonstrated high remission rates and improved survival outcomes compared with conventional therapies.
Commenting in the BBC report, Dr Tholouli explained that this form of CAR-T therapy is both safer and more effective than existing options, offering patients the possibility of long-term remission and, in some cases, cure. She described the development as “very significant” and as “revolutionising the way we tackle this cancer”.
Dr Tholouli has played a central role in establishing and expanding cellular and gene therapies, including CAR-T treatments, at Manchester Royal Infirmary, helping to make it one of the UK’s largest centres for these advanced therapies.
