McCollum Consultants is delighted to announce that Mr Lorcan Butler, Dispensing Optician and Optometrist, has joined our network of clinical expert witnesses.
With over 20 years of experience in primary eye care across Ireland, the UK, and New Zealand, Mr Butler brings a wealth of clinical expertise and a patient-focused approach to his medico-legal work. His areas of specialism include cataracts, congenital cataract and glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye disease, glaucoma, and visual field defects.
Mr Butler has undertaken comprehensive medico-legal training and regularly provides expert opinions for both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. His expertise extends to neuro-optometry and neuro-ophthalmology, with significant experience in assessing and monitoring complex conditions such as adult and paediatric brain tumours, papilloedema, and Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH).
Beyond his clinical practice, Mr Butler is actively involved in the advancement of optometry through leadership and education. He is an Education Committee member for the European Academy of Optometry & Optics and, from July 2025, the World Council of Optometry. He also co-chairs the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Eyecare Symposium and serves on the Council of the United Kingdom & Ireland Society of Ophthalmic Professionals (UKISOP).
In addition to his clinical and managerial accomplishments, Mr Butler is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Optometry at the University of Central Lancashire and a recognised Key Opinion Leader and lecturer, regularly presenting at conferences throughout the UK and Europe.
