Mr Paul Sutton, Consultant Colorectal, Pelvic and Peritoneal Surgeon, will present an AvMA Live Webinar on Tuesday 5th May 2026 (10:30am–11:30am).

In this one-hour session, Mr Sutton will explore the complex and often contentious issue of iatrogenic injury during abdominal surgery, providing valuable insight for legal professionals practising in clinical negligence and personal injury.

The webinar will cover:

This session will be particularly relevant to solicitors, barristers and legal executives handling surgical negligence claims, offering practical guidance on distinguishing recognised complications from negligent care, and clarifying when breach of duty may arise. Mr Sutton will also discuss the importance and scope of expert surgical evidence in such cases.

About Mr Paul Sutton

Qualifications: BMedSci (Hons) BMBS (Hons) FRCS PhD MMedEd DCH DRCOG EBSQ (Surgical Oncology)

Mr Sutton holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate in Civil Law and has experience preparing reports for the Civil, Crown and Coroners’ Courts, where he has appeared as a witness. His recent medico-legal CPD includes attendance at the AvMA Annual Clinical Negligence Conference.

Mr Sutton is experienced in the management of general and colorectal surgical conditions. During his formal training, he participated in 2,235 operative cases (excluding endoscopy), many of which were performed laparoscopically. He is a fully accredited JAG endoscopist in both upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. His expertise also includes robotic surgery for benign and malignant colorectal disease, colorectal stenting, TEMS, and endo-rectal ultrasound in the assessment of early rectal cancer.

After completing surgical training in 2019, Mr Sutton undertook a dedicated two-year post-CCT fellowship in advanced colorectal cancer and peritoneal surface malignancy. During this period, he gained further experience in robotics and complex surgery for colorectal, anal, neuroendocrine and sarcomatous tumours. He also completed the EBSQ in Surgical Oncology and the ESSO Fellowship in Peritoneal Surface Malignancy.

At The Christie Hospital, Mr Sutton specialises in complex colorectal cancer surgery and has introduced novel techniques for high-complexity exenteration procedures. His clinical interests also include peritoneal metastases and the management of appendix tumours. He is the Trust’s Endoscopy Training Lead and continues to provide comprehensive general and colorectal surgical care, including emergency surgical management of bleeding, perforation, sepsis and bowel obstruction.
