Medico-Legal experience

Mr Swaminathan is an experienced medico-legal expert, holding an Expert Witness Certificate from Cardiff University’s School of Law and Politics. Mr Swaminathan is happy to be instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Swaminathan joined Mid Cheshire Hospitals as a consultant in 2012, having completed their training in the Mersey rotation. He maintains practising privileges at Spire Regency Macclesfield, Circle Clinic Northwich, and Beaumont Hospital Bolton. Mr Swaminathan’s areas of special interest include Menopause, Subfertility (within his NHS practice based at the Hewitt Centre, Knutsford – Liverpool Womens’ NHS FT), and Laparoscopic Surgery, specifically addressing endometriosis and pelvic pain.

Mr Swaminathan serves as the deputy lead for gynaecological oncology and is a member of the South Manchester Cancer Network MDT, performing Laparoscopic Hysterectomies for endometrial cancers. He is an accredited menopause specialist with the British Menopause Society and holds an accreditation from the British Fertility Society as a specialist in pelvic ultrasound.

Clinical Interests

Mr Swaminathan has a broad range of clinical interests encompassing both surgical and medical gynaecological care. He specialises in laparoscopic surgery, including hysterectomy, and has a particular focus on the diagnosis and management of complex conditions such as endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain. Mr Swaminathan also provides comprehensive care for women experiencing menstrual irregularities including heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and post-menopausal bleeding, as well as conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and ovarian cysts.

Beyond general gynaecological care and menopause management, he is involved in secondary care gynaecological oncology and proficient in gynaecological ultrasound. Mr Swaminathan is also dedicated to ensuring patient safety and wellbeing, with a strong interest in the processes of informed consent and the management of post-operative complications.

Research Interests

Mr Swaminathans research focuses on improving outcomes for patients undergoing complex gynaecological oncological surgeries, with a particular interest in minimising post-operative complications. He is actively involved in clinical research as the Principal Investigator for the GaPP-2 trial, a multi-centre randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of gabapentin in managing chronic pelvic pain experienced by women. This work seeks to not only alleviate patient suffering but also to understand the underlying mechanisms driving this often debilitating condition.

Management Experience

Mr Swaminathan is highly experienced with significant leadership roles within Mid Cheshire NHS FT. Currently, he serves as Deputy Lead for Gynaecological Oncology, Lead Endometriosis Surgeon, and Menopause Lead, demonstrating expertise across a broad range of women's health specialties.Prior to these roles, he successfully led departmental initiatives focused on medical education, serving as Departmental Lead for undergraduate medical education for Manchester Medical School students, and also spearheaded the development of the Physician Associate program, showcasing a commitment to both clinical excellence and the training of future healthcare professionals.

Mr Swaminathans publication record demonstrates a consistent interest in women’s health across a range of clinical areas. His recent work, published in The Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (2023), focuses on the important and often overlooked link between menopause and mental health. Prior to this, his research has encompassed procedural outcomes, including an observational study of outpatient hysteroscopy in postmenopausal women (2015) and a detailed analysis of Laparoscopically Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) experience (2010). He has also contributed to research aimed at improving obstetric care, with work on predicting shoulder dystocia (2008) and a case report concerning haematometra following evacuation of retained products (2010), showcasing a broad scope of clinical and research interests within gynaecology and obstetrics.

Teaching & Training

Mr Swaminathan is actively involved in medical education and training. He has experience preparing candidates for the MRCOG examinations, serving as an RCOG moderator for the Enhanced Revision Programme. Furthermore, he previously led both Undergraduate Medical Education with the Manchester Medical School and the departmental Physician Associate program. He extends his educational outreach by delivering lectures on HRT and menopause to primary care physicians on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. Demonstrating a commitment to workforce development, Mr Swaminathan actively participates in the recruitment of training posts at local and regional levels, and regularly serves as a chair and panellist during Consultant interviews within his trust. He completed a Diploma in Management from the London School of Economics/University of London in 2012, further highlighting his leadership and organisational skills.
