Dr Andrew Medford

Dr Andrew Medford brings more than three decades of NHS service to adult respiratory and general medicine, of which eighteen years have been at consultant/specialist level (2008‑present). After attaining his CCT, he completed a post‑CCT fellowship in endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), lung cancer and pleural disease at the Institute for Lung Health, Glenfield Hospital (2008‑09), establishing himself as a national expert and key opinion leader in EBUS. In his full‑time NHS role he provides comprehensive adult respiratory care–excluding cystic fibrosis and transplant medicine–while also maintaining a general medicine portfolio. He routinely leads high‑volume specialist and general respiratory clinics, manages admission‑avoidance pathways, and delivers weekend respiratory on‑call coverage. His inpatient responsibilities encompass the respiratory wards, a dedicated High Dependency Unit, and a specialist referral service, and he is proficient in advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy techniques, including EBUS and autofluorescence bronchoscopy.

Dr Medford’s clinical curiosity spans the entire spectrum of adult respiratory disease, with particular focus on lung cancer (including EBUS‑guided staging, conventional bronchoscopy and autofluorescence bronchoscopy), complex lung infections (aspergillosis, opportunistic pathogens and severe pneumonia), and non‑cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (notably allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis). He is also deeply engaged in pleural disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, mediastinal pathology, and interstitial lung disease–especially sarcoidosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, eosinophilic pneumonias and drug‑induced ILD. His expertise extends to airway disorders such as asthma and COPD, chronic cough syndromes (including laryngopharyngeal reflux and laryngeal hypersensitivity), pulmonary vascular disease (chronic thromboembolic disease and pulmonary hypertension), chronic ventilatory failure, acute lung injury/ARDS, developmental lung anomalies in adults (e.g., lung sequestration), and pulmonary vasculitis.

At a national level Dr Medford serves as Specialist Adviser to the Parliamentary & Health Service Ombudsman (2021 present) and as a Clinical Negligence Assessor for NHS Resolution, contributing to the The Medico-Legal Experts Practice (TMLEP) programme since 2017. He sits on the editorial boards of Respiration and Thoracic Cancer (2011 present). Earlier national appointments include Interventional Pulmonology Specialist Advisor to NICE (2012 15), multiple editorial and governance roles with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE), and extensive involvement with the British Thoracic Society (BTS) in coding, standards, interventional pulmonology, and scientific meetings. Locally, he has been the EBUS Lead since 2009 and the Bronchoscopy Lead since 2025, pioneering the first tertiary level EBUS service in the South West and overseeing several BTS national audits. Past local leadership roles have encompassed rota coordination, PACS steering, education leadership, and deputy lung cancer coordination, together with successful business case development for enhanced EBUS equipment and portable ultrasound services.

An Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol, Dr Medford earned an MD from the University of Edinburgh in 2007 for his work on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in ARDS. His research agenda centres on EBUS and mediastinal disease, advanced bronchoscopy, pleural pathology, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, and the broader biology of lung defence and injury, including VEGF pathways in ARDS. He contributes regularly as a peer reviewer for leading journals and participates in national audit projects that shape respiratory practice.

Dr Medford is a prolific author in the field of adult respiratory medicine, with 262 peer‑reviewed publications spanning clinical research, translational studies, and educational scholarship. His work has been cited 4,915 times, reflecting a strong influence on both national and international respiratory practice. He currently holds an h‑index of 35, indicating that at least 35 of his papers have each received 35 or more citations, and an i10‑index of 66, demonstrating that 66 of his articles have been cited at least ten times. On ResearchGate his contributions are quantified by a ResearchGate Score of 1,946, underscoring his high level of engagement and impact within the scientific community. The breadth of Dr Medford’s research portfolio includes pioneering studies on endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and mediastinal staging, investigations into the pathophysiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and VEGF signaling, extensive work on lung cancer diagnostics and therapeutics, and numerous contributions to the understanding of interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, and complex airway disorders. Holding the Royal College of Physicians “Physician as Educator” accreditation since 2009, Dr Medford is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) from 2013. He has shaped national education policy through roles with the RCPE, RCP and editorial boards, authored MRCP Part 1 questions for Oxford University Press (2011 12), and produced patient focused information for Cancer Research UK (2021 23). As a PACES examiner (2012 13) and local Education Lead (2012 22), he established a structured EBUS training programme, mentored trainees who received multiple regional awards, and helped his department achieve the second best postgraduate education rating in the South West according to HEE tables. His commitment to scholarly development is reflected in regular co authorship of peer reviewed papers with resident doctors.

Dr Medford’s medico legal portfolio includes his ongoing appointment as Specialist Adviser to the Parliamentary & Health Service Ombudsman, where he provides expert guidance on complaints and systemic safety issues.
