Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Professor Malhotra provides independent expert opinion in cardiology, with a particular focus on sports cardiology, sudden cardiac death, and inherited cardiac conditions. His medico-legal work includes personal injury and clinical negligence cases, as well as inquest reports relating to unexpected cardiac death. He is experienced in the detailed review of medical records, interpretation of cardiovascular investigations, and the preparation of clear, structured reports in accordance with Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules. His areas of expertise include the assessment of symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations and syncope, as well as the evaluation of cardiac investigations including ECGs, ambulatory monitoring, exercise testing and cardiac imaging. He is able to provide opinion on breach of duty and causation where appropriate, particularly in cases involving delayed or missed diagnosis, screening failures, or the management of cardiac symptoms and conditions in both general and athletic populations.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Professor Aneil Malhotra is a Consultant Cardiologist with subspecialist expertise in sports cardiology and inherited cardiac conditions. He holds NHS, academic and private appointments in Manchester and is actively involved in the cardiovascular assessment of both general cardiology patients and athletic populations ranging from recreational individuals to elite professional athletes.

His clinical practice encompasses general cardiology including the assessment of chest pain, palpitations, syncope and exercise intolerance. He has a particular focus on distinguishing physiological cardiac adaptation from pathological disease in athletes. He has extensive experience in the interpretation of 12-lead ECGs, ambulatory monitoring, exercise tolerance testing, and advanced cardiac imaging including echocardiography and cardiac MRI.

He is regularly involved in pre-participation cardiovascular screening programmes and the longitudinal follow up of individuals with suspected or confirmed cardiac pathology. His practice includes risk stratification for sudden cardiac death, particularly in young individuals and athletes, and he works closely with multidisciplinary teams in the management of complex cardiovascular conditions.

Clinical Interests

Professor Aneil Malhotra’s clinical interests lie at the intersection of sports cardiology and inherited cardiac disease, with a particular emphasis on the cardiovascular assessment of athletes ranging from recreational participants to elite professionals. He is focused on distinguishing physiological cardiac adaptation from pathological conditions, refining pre‑participation screening pathways, and developing robust risk‑stratification tools for sudden cardiac death in young individuals and athletes.

His practice incorporates expert interpretation of 12‑lead ECGs, ambulatory monitoring, exercise testing, and advanced imaging (echocardiography and cardiac MRI) to detect subtle pathology. In addition, he is keenly interested in integrating emerging technologies – especially artificial‑intelligence‑driven diagnostics – into screening programmes, and in shaping national and international policies that promote multidisciplinary, guideline‑based care for complex cardiovascular conditions.

Research Interests

Professor Malhotra’s research focuses on sports cardiology, cardiovascular screening and the prevention of sudden cardiac death. His work includes the evaluation of ECG interpretation strategies, risk stratification tools, and the role of cardiac imaging in identifying underlying pathology in athletic populations. His research program of work focuses on identifying predictors of sudden cardiac death in young people. He has a particular interest in the interface between physiological adaptation and disease, as well as in emerging technologies including artificial intelligence in cardiovascular diagnostics. His research aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of screening programmes and to inform clinical guidelines and policy at both national and international level.

Management Experience

Professor Malhotra has achieved a distinction in his MSc in Medical Leadership at Birkbeck University and the Royal College of Physicians. He has held a number of leadership and governance roles within cardiology and sports medicine. He is actively involved in shaping clinical services related to cardiovascular screening and sports cardiology, including the development of structured screening pathways and multidisciplinary care models. He contributes to national, international and organisational policy development, particularly in relation to athlete cardiac screening and the prevention of sudden cardiac death. He has experience in leading clinical teams, supervising junior doctors and allied health professionals, and delivering high quality, guideline-based care within both NHS and private sector settings.

Summary of Publications

Professor Malhotra has an extensive publication record in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, including leading cardiology and sports medicine journals. His work has focused on athlete screening, ECG interpretation, sudden cardiac death, and cardiovascular risk stratification. He has authored and co-authored >100 original research articles, reviews and consensus statements, and his research has contributed to the evidence base underpinning contemporary sports cardiology practice. His publications have appeared in journals such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal and the British Journal of Sports Medicine. He is a lead author on a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine. A full publication list can be provided.

Teaching & Training

Professor Malhotra is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He teaches medical students, junior doctors and specialist trainees in cardiology, with a focus on clinical assessment, ECG interpretation and cardiovascular imaging. He is also involved in the training of healthcare professionals in sports cardiology and delivers lectures at national and international conferences. He supervises research fellows and postgraduate students and is committed to developing the next generation of clinicians and researchers in cardiology.
