Medico-Legal Experience
Dr Smith has a vast medico-legal experience; producing medico-legal reports since 2009. Dr Smith is happy to be instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.
Clinical Practice & Experience
Dr Smith obtained her MBBS in 1988 from the University of Melbourne; she later went on to qualifiy as a Doctor of Medicine in 1998, her research focusing on factors determining the outcome of hepatitis C virus infection. Currently, Dr Smith is a Consultant Hepatologist and General Physician at St. Mary’s Hospital, London. Alongside this, Dr Smith is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, Consultant Hepatologist at the Royal Free Hospital, Lead for the West London Primary Billary Cirrhosis ODN, and a Medical Assessor for the England Infected Blood Support Scheme. Dr Smith conducts six outpatient clinics a week, and attends multidisciplinary meetings reviewing liver histology, liver radiology, viral hepatitis management and obstetric medicine. She coordinates the haemochromatois service at St Mary’s hospital
Clinical Interests
Dr Smith has interests in general hepatology, viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, pregnancy and liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, liver transplant assessment, haemochromatois and abnormal liver function tests. She conducts specialist clinics in pregnancy related liver disease (with the Queen Charlotte’s Hospital), autoimmune liver disease, and liver transplant follow up. She also looks after inpatient liver patients at St Mary’s Hospital.
Management Experience
Dr Smith has undertaken appraiser training and was previously responsible for all consultant/staff grade appraisals within the Gastroenterology CMG at the Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital Trust.
Research Interests
Dr Smith is involved in clinical trials for alcoholic hepatitis, hepatitis B and autoimmune liver disease.
Summary of Publications
Dr Smith has published widely, sharing her research and expert opinion in over 30 publications. These cover a range of hepatology topics including autoimmune liver disease, viral hepatitis, haemochromatois, pregnancy related liver disease and drug induced liver disease.
Teaching & Training
Dr Smith was the Module Leader BSC in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Imperial College (2009-2015), and a Clinical Tutor Year 3 MBBS Imperial College (2011- 2015). She continues to lecture regularly on both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
