Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Benoy Shah enjoys receiving instructions from both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Benoy N Shah qualified from Imperial College London in 2002. While completing his undergraduate training he earned a First‑Class honours intercalated BSc in cardiovascular medicine and was awarded both Honours and the Glazer Prize in the Surgical MBBS Finals. Over the past two decades his career has been devoted exclusively to cardiology. After nine years as a cardiology registrar—three of which were spent on a higher research fellowship at Imperial College—he was appointed a substantive NHS consultant in Southampton in 2015 and has served in that capacity for more than a decade. Dr Shah works on a full on‑call rota at Southampton General Hospital, a large tertiary referral centre and university teaching hospital, and manages a broad spectrum of adult patients. His daily caseload includes acute coronary syndromes, heart‑failure syndromes, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias and syncope. He routinely evaluates patients presenting with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, peripheral oedema and loss of consciousness. Dr Shah does not engage in private practice; all of his clinical activity is confined to the NHS trust.

Clinical Interests

Dr Shah’s subspecialty interests centre on cardiovascular imaging—particularly echocardiography—valvular heart disease and coronary artery disease. He holds British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) accreditations in transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echocardiography and serves on the BSE stress‑echocardiography accreditation committee. He has also contributed to the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging’s transoesophageal echocardiography certification process. In his weekly practice he is responsible for both stress‑echo and transoesophageal echo lists, and he routinely performs TOE guidance during structural heart interventions such as mitral and tricuspid transcatheter edge‑to‑edge repair, mitral valve‑in‑valve and valve‑in‑ring implantations. Dr Shah maintains a keen clinical focus on infective endocarditis, managing both native and prosthetic valve infections, and on pericardial disease, having authored Southampton General Hospital’s trust guideline for the management of acute and chronic pericarditis.

Research Interests

During a three year research fellowship in London, Dr Shah published extensively on coronary artery disease, valvular pathology, heart failure, carotid disease and radiation induced cardiovascular injury, as well as editorials and reviews. His primary research focus remains the application of advanced echocardiographic techniques—transthoracic, transoesophageal, 3 D, contrast and stress imaging—to everyday clinical practice, especially in the context of valvular heart disease. Although his NHS post provides no dedicated research time, he has continued to contribute to the scientific literature, authoring more than 50 peer reviewed articles since becoming a consultant in 2015.

Management Experience

At the national level Dr Shah served on the Council of the British Heart Valve Society (BHVS) for more than ten years, progressing from Communications Secretary (2013 2016) to Education Secretary (2016 2019), then President (2019 2022) and Past President (2022 2023). His presidency coincided with the COVID 19 pandemic, during which he coordinated rapid guidance for patients with valve disease and liaised with multiple national bodies to safeguard patient care. Locally, he oversees the training and delivery of echocardiography education for cardiology registrars, represents cardiology on the Trust’s anticoagulation and thrombosis committees, and has led the development of institutional guidelines for anticoagulation in patients with mechanical heart valves and for the management of pericarditis.

Teaching & Training

A passionate educator, Dr Shah regularly delivers talks at national and international conferences and, as BHVS Education Secretary, shaped the society’s educational agenda for heart valve disease training across multidisciplinary teams. He has contributed to national guideline documents and co authored chapters in echocardiography textbooks, including the British Society of Echocardiography’s guidelines on aortic stenosis and prosthetic valve assessment. Within Southampton General Hospital he conducts weekly teaching sessions for junior doctors, a commitment he began on his own time and that has earned him the Senior Doctor Award in 2024, with a further finalist nomination in 2025.
