Clinical Practice & Experience

Ms Caroline Whitaker qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1996 after obtaining a Diploma in Professional Nursing Practice. She subsequently specialised in stoma care, completing the ENB216 Stoma Care Nursing module in 2001, a Paediatric Stoma Care course and becoming a Community Prescriber in 2011. In that same year she earned a BSc (Hons) in Contemporary Healthcare Practice from Manchester University, further reinforcing her evidence‑based approach to nursing. Since 2005 she has worked exclusively in stoma care across community and acute settings, serving a large catch‑area, a district general hospital and a leading specialist cancer centre. Her clinical repertoire includes comprehensive assessment of stoma sites, advanced counselling to address the psychosocial impact of living with a stoma, and the delivery of tailored education programmes for patients, families and multidisciplinary teams.

In addition to her direct patient work, Ms Whitaker plays a pivotal role in the management and development of the stoma service. She contributes to budget planning, resource allocation and the procurement of supplies, while leading audit cycles that monitor clinical outcomes, compliance with national standards and cost‑effectiveness. Her extensive expertise, underpinned by robust academic credentials and a decade‑plus of specialist practice, establishes her as a recognised authority in both community‑based and hospital‑based stoma care.

Clinical Interests

Ms Whitaker’s clinical interests centre on the holistic management of stoma patients. She is passionate about advancing stoma care through the refinement of sophisticated assessment and appliance‑selection techniques, the delivery of expert counselling that addresses the emotional and social dimensions of living with a stoma, and the provision of comprehensive education programmes for patients, families and health‑care teams.

Management Experience

In her current role, Ms Whitaker supports her line manager in the overall administration of the Stoma Care Service. She contributes to workforce planning, monitors service performance against key quality indicators, assists with budget oversight and procurement, and coordinates audit and audit‑feedback processes. Her involvement ensures that the service operates efficiently, meets regulatory standards and continuously improves the patient experience.

Teaching & Training

Ms Whitaker is actively engaged in teaching and training across a broad spectrum of audiences. She delivers individualised education and practical support to patients, relatives and carers, ensuring confidence in stoma management and promoting independence. In addition, she provides formal tuition and in‑service training to all members of the multidisciplinary team including surgeons, ward nurses, dietitian's and allied health professionals as well as to external groups such as schools, care homes and nursing homes. Her expertise is regularly sought at professional gatherings; she has presented at the annual Stoma Nurse Conference, sharing best‑practice insights and emerging evidence with peers nationwide.
