Expert Witness Professor Daniel Perry Consultant Children’s Orthopaedic Surgeon

Professor Perry accepts instructions from both Claimant and Defendant solicitors in clinical negligence cases involving children’s orthopaedic care.

His principal areas of medico-legal expertise include delayed or missed diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip, SCFE/SUFE, paediatric fractures, musculoskeletal infection, hip disorders and the management of orthopaedic trauma in children.

He has completed the Bond Solon Excellence in Written Evidence course.

Professor Daniel Perry is Professor of Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, an NIHR Research Professor, and a Consultant Children’s Orthopaedic Surgeon at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. He also holds an honorary academic appointment at the University of Oxford.

He trained in Liverpool and Warwick before completing a fellowship at SickKids Hospital in Toronto. He subsequently joined the University of Oxford’s Kadoorie Institute for Trauma and Emergency Care and became a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford, before returning to Liverpool. He was the first orthopaedic surgeon to be awarded an NIHR Research Professorship. More recently, he completed Harvard Business School’s Program for Leadership Development, a year-long executive leadership programme for senior leaders.

Professor Perry specialises in children’s orthopaedic surgery, with particular expertise in hip disease, musculoskeletal trauma and infection. His clinical interests include developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE/SUFE), Perthes’ disease, paediatric fractures and musculoskeletal infection.

He is Clinical Lead for the national infant hip screening programme.

Professor Perry leads a large group of clinical and research staff, delivering the largest portfolio of children’s orthopaedic surgery worldwide.

Professor Perry leads TOTS Research, a major international programme of clinical trials in children’s trauma and orthopaedics. His research portfolio exceeds £35 million and includes large multicentre studies conducted across the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

His research has been published in leading journals including The Lancet, JAMA and The BMJ, and has influenced the treatment of common childhood orthopaedic conditions internationally.

Alongside clinical trials, he leads research evaluating artificial intelligence and new technologies in children’s orthopaedic care, with a particular focus on translating new technologies safely and rigorously into routine clinical practice.

Professor Perry has published over 130 research papers. He is one of a handful of surgeons to have published studies in world-leading journals such as the Lancet, JAMA, the BMJ, which have changed clinical practice internationally.

Professor Perry is a Professor at the University of Liverpool. He supervises PhD students at the University of Liverpool and University of Oxford, and regularly contributes to teaching programmes around the world.
