Medico-Legal experience

Mr Mills has undergone his expert witness training with Bond Solon and is registered with APIL, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He is happy to represent both Claimant and Defendant law firms in both personal injury and clinical negligence actions. Mr Mills can usually turnaround reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Edward Mills was appointed as both Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield in 2012. He undertook his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in West Yorkshire followed by fellowship training in the Ilizarov Method at the Northern General Hospital Sheffield. Since 2018, Mr Mills has also enjoyed his role as a Major Trauma Consultant.

Clinical Interests

Mr Mills has a particular interest in severe lower limb fractures including fractures of the tibial plateau and plafond, as well as segmental and open fractures (including bone loss), treated with fine wire circular fixators using Ilizarov methods. He also has extensive expertise in general trauma of the lower and upper limb. His elective practice encompasses post-traumatic and developmental limb reconstruction, including non-union, malunion & deformity, limb length inequality, bone infection and amputation. Mr Mills’ interests also expand to hip fracture management including atypical (bisphosphonate related) fractures and total hip replacement (THR) for trauma and degenerative conditions.

Research Interests

Mr Mills has particular interest in the research of lower limb trauma, as well as the reduction of infection at the surgical site. He was also the Principal Investigator for the Wound Healing in Surgery for Trauma (WHIST) multicentre trial in Sheffield.

Management Experience

Mr Mills is enthusiastic in his role as Clinical Lead for hip fractures at the Northern General Hospital, which includes governance and audit lead.

Co-author: The effect of computerised tomography on operative planning in posterior malleolus ankle fractures. Foot Ankle Surgery, 2020.Co-author: Malreduction of tibial articular width in bicondylar tibial plateau fractures treated with circular external fixation is associated with post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Teaching & Training

Mr Mills was awarded Trainer of the Year by the South Yorkshire Trauma and Orthopaedics Higher Surgical Trainer in 2016; this well-respected award is made to a single Consultant deemed to have provided the highest quality training and teaching in the previous year.Mr Mills also teaches on the following courses: Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills, Ilizarov External fixation for allied health professionals Ilizarov External fixation for surgeons, Monolateral external fixation course for registrars and consultants Summer University lower limb trauma course for registrars Royal College of Surgeons Glasgow – Limb reconstruction webinars.

Prizes and Awards

Trainer of the year; South Yorkshire Trauma and Orthopaedics, 2016

STH Patient Safety Award 2018: As Orthopaedic Lead for hip fractures in Sheffield, Mr Mills’ team managed to reduced infection rate to less than 1% and sustained this improvement to date.

Finalist in the Health Service Journal Patient Safety awards 2018 in the infection control category.
