Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Coulson is registered with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), the National Crime Agency (NCA), and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He is happy to be instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence actions. Dr Coulson can usually turnaround reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Coulson qualified in medicine in 1978 from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London. After gaining his higher qualifications in general internal medicine in 1981, Dr Coulson commenced training in dermatology. After working at the national skin hospital, the St John’s Hospital, for diseases of the skin in London, he had posts as a Registrar and Senior Registrar at St George’s Hospital in South London. Dr Coulson began consultant practice in East Lancashire in 1990 and is currently at the East Lancashire Acute NHS Trust as a locum since partial retirement from the NHS in 2014.

Clinical Interests

Dr Coulson has a broad range of clinical interests in all areas of clinical dermatology and skin surgery. He has a local responsibility for the investigation or contact and industrial dermatitis and co-writes the UK investigation guidelines. He is the Dermatologist to the Aintree Centre of Excellence for Behcet’s disease.

Research Interests

Dr Coulson has research interests in the mechanisms of inflammation in atopic eczema.

Management Experience

Dr Coulson was skin cancer network chairman for the Lancashire and South Cumbria area between 2005 - 2010. He is current Editor in Chief of DermNet, the world’s largest dermatology information site.

Summary of Publications

Dr Coulson has written over 80 clinical and research papers. He has also co-edited a textbook ‘Treatment of Skin Disease’ published in 2002, which became the global dermatology best seller in 2004. He has contributed chapters to the major UK Textbook of Dermatology (Rook’s Textbook) edition 5 to 10. Dr Coulson was the therapy section editor of the British Journal of Dermatology between 2004 and 2009.

Teaching & Training

Dr Coulson lectures and presents research material at the American Academy of Dermatology and the British Association of Dermatologists annual meetings. Dr Coulson has also produced a nationally used e-learning module covering the core undergraduate medical curriculum and produces practical patient information on YouTube.

Prizes and Awards

2022: Sir Archibald Gray Medal, the highest award that the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) bestows, for “outstanding contributions to Dermatology”

2006: The Bristol Cup prize for best poster presentation

1999: The Silver prize at BAD

1986: Registrar’s Prize by the St John’s Hospital Dermatology Society
