Mr Ian Smith

Mr Ian Smith is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where he leads a high‑volume plastic surgery service that encompasses both elective and emergency reconstructive work. In parallel, he maintains a thriving private practice at Spire Leeds and Nuffield Leeds, providing comprehensive plastic and aesthetic procedures to a diverse patient cohort. His clinical expertise is underpinned by a dual qualification in medicine (University of Leeds School of Medicine) and dentistry (University of Birmingham School of Dentistry), initial training in maxillofacial surgery, and full general surgical training in Leeds. Following this foundation, Mr Smith completed specialist training in plastic surgery across the Leeds and Yorkshire region, supplemented by two prestigious fellowships in Australia—first at the Australian Craniofacial Unit in Adelaide and subsequently at the Royal Brisbane Hospital—where he acquired advanced skills in head and neck reconstruction and the management of complex skin cancers.

Mr Smith’s clinical interests are broad yet highly focused on the subspecialty areas that benefit most from his reconstructive expertise. He routinely undertakes general plastic surgery cases, ranging from traumatic soft‑tissue reconstruction to microsurgical free‑flap procedures. A particular passion lies in sarcoma and surgical oncology, where he collaborates closely with multidisciplinary tumour boards to deliver limb‑sparing and oncologically sound resections followed by sophisticated reconstructions. In addition, Mr Smith maintains an active aesthetic practice, offering cosmetic procedures that integrate his reconstructive principles to achieve natural and durable outcomes.

In his capacity as Lead Clinician for the Plastic Surgery Department and for the Sarcoma Regional Centre at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, Mr Smith provides strategic direction, oversees service development, and ensures the delivery of high quality patient care across both NHS and specialist cancer pathways. He serves as Chair of the Intercollegiate Board of Examiners for the FRCS (Plast) and acts as an assessor for the same examination, shaping the next generation of plastic surgeons. Mr Smith is also Hon Treasurer and an officer of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), and chairs the BAPRAS Special Interest and Advisory Group for Sarcoma. From 2012 to 2020 he directed the Yorkshire and Humber Training Programme, and he remains an active member of the National Plastic Surgery Specialty Advisory Committee.

Mr Smith’s research agenda is centred on surgical oncology, with particular emphasis on the development of novel reconstructive techniques for sarcoma and head and neck malignancies. His work seeks to improve functional outcomes, reduce postoperative morbidity, and integrate emerging technologies such as 3D modelling and intra‑operative navigation into complex oncologic reconstructions.

Mr Smith is a prolific clinician‑researcher whose work bridges hand surgery, reconstructive microsurgery and sarcoma management. He introduced a fail‑safe digital tourniquet (J. Hand Surg 2002), examined moving‑image recording of hand motion (Br. J. Plast. Surg 2002), and later authored landmark studies on chronic osteomyelitis, radial‑forearm–palmaris free‑flap lip reconstruction, rare paediatric maxillary lesions, post‑Le Fort I arteriovenous malformations and long‑term mandibular rhabdomyosarcoma care. His contributions to cleft‑lip/palate protocol outcomes, morphea‑associated squamous‑cell carcinoma, and a book chapter on free vascularised fibular bone graft (Springer 2011) further attest to his breadth. Smith has also been a sought‑after speaker, delivering invited keynotes at the British Sarcoma Group (Swansea, 2022), Royal Society of Medicine Sarcoma Symposium (London, 2022), BAPRAS Advanced Educational Conference (Sheffield, 2023), Doctors Update (France, 2026) and the BAPRAS Special Interest Sarcoma Group (2026).

A committed educator, Mr Smith led the Yorkshire and Humber Training Programme and chaired the Surgical Training Committee from 2012 to 2020, overseeing curriculum design, trainee assessment, and workforce planning. He regularly serves as an examiner and Chair of the Board of Examiners for the FRCS (Plast), and he contributes to national policy as a member of the Plastic Surgery Specialist Advisory Committee.
