Mr Ravi Chekuri

Mr Ravi Chekuri serves as a Consultant Adult and Paediatric Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon at The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, where he also holds the position of Clinical Governance Lead for Complex Spine Surgery. His entire clinical practice is devoted to spinal surgery, encompassing both emergency and elective care. At the major trauma centre in London, he manages high‑energy spinal injuries, spinal tumours, and spinal infections, while within the Complex Spine Surgery division he routinely performs cervical, thoracic, and lumbar procedures.

Mr Chekuri earned his primary medical degree and completed basic orthopaedic training in India before undertaking higher specialty training in the United Kingdom through the London Deanery and Health Education England. He holds a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Trauma & Orthopaedics and GMC specialist registration, bringing more than 13 years of orthopaedic experience, including five years focused on spine surgery for trauma, degenerative disease, deformity, and tumours. He completed two post‑CCT spine fellowships—first at the Royal London Hospital and subsequently at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore—gaining expertise in adult and paediatric spinal deformity correction, scoliosis surgery, spinal navigation, lumbar lateral access, minimally invasive techniques, and spinal endoscopy.

Mr Chekuri’s clinical interests centre on the management of spinal injuries, the correction of adult and paediatric spinal deformities, and the advancement of minimally invasive spinal surgery. He is particularly engaged with techniques that reduce tissue disruption, such as lateral lumbar access and endoscopic approaches, and applies these methods routinely in his practice.

In his role as Clinical Governance Lead for Complex Spine Surgery at the Royal London Hospital, Mr Chekuri oversees the quality and safety standards of the department’s spinal programmes, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and national guidelines.

His research agenda focuses on the integration of enabling technologies in spinal surgery, exploring how novel imaging, navigation, and instrumentation can enhance operative precision and patient outcomes.

Mr Chekuri’s research portfolio centres on spinal and orthopaedic trauma. He acted as Associate Principal Investigator for the multicentre BASIS randomised trial (2023 2024) at the Royal London Hospital. His systematic review and meta analysis demonstrated superior accuracy of 3D printed drill guides versus fluoroscopic free hand techniques for upper cervical pedicle screw insertion (Musculoskeletal Surgery, Dec 2024). Earlier studies include a technique for correcting Charcot hind foot deformity with a retrograde nail (Foot & Ankle Surgery, 2018) and an analysis of increased mortality in proximal femoral fracture patients during the COVID 19 pandemic (JBJS Open Access, 2020). At major meetings he has presented on low intensity pulsed ultrasound for fracture non union (BSSH, 2016), pandemic related hip fracture mortality (ASIT, 2020), denosumab treatment of spinal aneurysmal bone cysts (BASS, 2022), and patient reported outcomes after en bloc vertebrectomy for spinal tumours (Eurospine, 2022). Mr Chekuri is an active educator, serving as faculty for a range of postgraduate courses, including the JBJS MRC Oxford Diploma in Spinal Surgery, the MCh Orthopaedics program at University College Hospital, the Kings College Hospital FRCS (T&O) exam course, the Royal London Hospital FRCS trauma course, and the SCM spine course for allied health professionals. He also acts as an Educational and Clinical Supervisor for orthopaedic specialty trainees and contributes to FRCS (T&O) faculty teaching.
