Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Armstrong has been acting as an expert witness for over 25 years and has undergone expert witness training. Dr Armstrong enjoys a full medico-legal practice instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. Dr Armstrong has given evidence in Court on many occasions.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Armstrong is currently a part-time NHS Consultant at the University Hospital Southampton; appointed full time in 1985. He was the Clinical Lead for Rheumatology from 1998-2014. He has also been providing a monthly visiting rheumatology service to Guernsey since 1997. Previously, Dr Armstrong was a Visiting Professor of Rheumatology at the Al Mouwasat Hospital in Saudi Arabia between 28 January 2000 to 10 February 2000. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1971 and the Guy’s Hospital Medical School in 1974.

Clinical Interests

Dr Armstrong provides a service embracing the full spectrum of rheumatological disorders. His main interests are in inflammatory rheumatic disease; however, his clinical practice embraces all aspects of rheumatology including spinal pain, soft tissue, rheumatism, bone disease, inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disorders, muscle and bone disorders, fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes, and occupation and work-related rheumatic disorders.

Research Interests

Dr Armstrong was a committee member for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for 10 years and worked for NHS Evidence. He has authored and coauthored multiple publications focusing on computer-assisted learning and musculoskeletal diseases.

Management Experience

Dr Armstrong was the Clinical Lead for rheumatology for over 15 years and was the President of Rosmey branch of arthritis care until 2006.

Summary of Publications

Dr Armstrong has authored or co-authored numerous professional publications, mostly peer reviewed. In 1997 he authored and programmed an interactive CD ROM on Rheumatology which was published by Cambridge University Press. Dr Armstrong has also refereed numerous papers for a variety of medical journals.

Teaching & Training

Dr Armstrong delivers undergraduate teaching in rheumatology for medical students at the Southampton University Medical School and frequently participates in postgraduate medical education for general practitioners, junior hospital doctors in training, and other professional groups allied to medicine.
