Expert Witness – Mr Thomas Finnigan
Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon

Mr Finnigan has undertaken medico-legal training. Mr Finnigan is happy to be instructed by both claimant and defendant law firms in personal injury cases. He has given evidence in Court. . Since 2018, he has provided over 1000 expert medicolegal reports across England and Scotland, including negligence reports, condition and prognosis evaluations, and multi-track claims. Mr. Finnigan delivers clear, Civil Procedures Rules-compliant reports, drawing on extensive expertise in knee and hip trauma, reconstructive surgery, and sports injuries

Mr Finnigan completed his pre-clinical studies at the University of Cambridge, followed by graduating with distinction from the University of Manchester. Afterward, he completed his surgical training in the North West Deanery, gaining experience across various surgical disciplines. In 2010, Mr Finnigan began his specialist training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, focusing on treating musculoskeletal conditions. In 2018, after nearly a decade of training, he was appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Finnigan has clinical interests in all aspects of lower limb orthopaedic surgery, with a specialist interest in knee surgery. He can provide expertise on surgical procedures such as total & partial knee replacement, ligament and meniscal injuries. He has extensive experience in the management soft tissue knee injuries including ligament, meniscal and cartilage injuries, knee osteoarthritis. Mr Finnigan also has an interest in hip surgery including hip fractures and simple & complex hip trauma. He also has expertise lying in sports injuries of the knee and hip.

Mr Finnigan was the Guardian of Safe Working at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust from 2019-2024.

Mr Finnigan is currently involved in several trials based at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. Lead investigator looking at retrograde nailings system of femoral fractures. Involved in the REPORT trial looking at the management of patella instability. Lead Consultant on a Royal College of Surgeons initiative, SUPPORT, looking at helping Consultants who have complications within their field.

Mr Finnigan has written and been part of many publications including; Tendon repair through stem cell intervention: cellular and molecular approaches.
