The coverage follows reports that Christian Eriksen is recovering well after collapsing during an international match, with his ICD device responding appropriately and helping to restore normal heart rhythm.
ICDs are small, life-saving devices designed to detect and correct dangerous heart rhythm disturbances. In Eriksen’s case, the device is understood to have delivered a corrective shock when a malignant rhythm was detected, allowing rapid recovery.
Professor Malhotra, speaking in the BBC coverage, explains the effect of ICD therapy and how such devices function as highly effective safeguards in individuals at risk of sudden cardiac events. He describes how ICDs “reset” the heart rhythm by delivering a controlled electrical shock when required.
The wider reporting also highlights the importance of rapid recognition and treatment of sudden cardiac arrest, as well as the growing understanding of how athletes with underlying cardiac conditions can, in many cases, safely return to sport under specialist supervision.
