Clinical Practice & Experience
Mr Malakasis currently practices as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Maternal Medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals, Oxford. Mr Malakasis qualified in Greece and then spent over ten years training within Obstetrics and Gynaecology both in Greece and UK. He finished his residency in the biggest university hospital in Athens and he continued his training in tertiary centres in the UK. He finished his fellowship in Fetal and Maternal Medicine in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals where he started his career as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Maternal Medicine. For the last 4 years he has worked as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Maternal Medicine at Oxford University Hospitals.
Clinical Interests
Mr Malakasis has a clinical specialist interest in obstetrics, high risk pregnancies and maternal medicine. This includes birth trauma, intrapartum care, pre-eclampsia, diabetes in pregnancy, pre-existing medical conditions in pregnancy, antenatal care fetal monitoring and stillbirth. He is the Lead of the Antenatal Diabetes Service in Oxford and member of the acclaimed maternal medicine team.
Management Experience
Mr Malakasis is the Lead for the Antenatal Diabetes Service the last 4 years at Oxford University Hospitals establishing new clinics and expanding the service. He also served as CRN Lead for 3 years with numerous studies included in the portfolio.
Research Interests
Mr Malakasis was the Clinical Research Network Lead for Reproductive Health at Thames Valley and Midlands for 3 years and was sitting at the National Institute for Health and Care Research panel for his specialty. He has been the PI in his hospital for important national studies like the PROTECT trial and the WILL trial. He has a special interest in the research about diabetes in pregnancy and maternal medicine. His MSc on the application of basic science in medicine broadened his horizons in research.
Summary of Publications
Mr Malakasis has authored articles in peer-reviewed journals on diabetes in pregnancy and other topics in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and also has written the chapter of thyroid disease in the The EBCOG Postgraduate Textbook of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. He delivers regular podium presentations in national and international conferences with respect to his expertise.
Teaching & Training
Mr Malakasis provides formal teaching for the undergraduate education for the University of Oxford. He is an accredited Educational Supervisor for junior doctors and he has been the clinical supervisor for several resident doctors.
