Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Mr Clayson has been acting as an expert witness since 1994. He provides a medico-legal practice instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. He has regular experience of conferences with Counsel, Court appearances when required and regularly receives instructions from bodies such as The NHS Litigation Authority, The Motor Insurers Bureau, The Ministry of Defence, The General Medical Council, and other regulatory bodies.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Having established the North West Regional Pelvic, Acetabular and Young Adult Hip Service in 1994, Mr Clayson has become a nationally recognised expert in the management of polytrauma patients, pelvic fractures and complex problems of the hip joint and pelvic bones, regularly receiving referrals from outside the North West of England. In addition to the management of pelvic trauma patients plus complex injuries of the hip, knee and lower limb, he has been actively involved in the establishment of Major Trauma Centres and networks across the Northwest of England. As an NHS Consultant at the Wrightington Specialist Orthopaedic Hospital, Mr Clayson’s elective expertise lies both in the field of joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee, and the assessment and management of young adult hip pain including the treatment of patients with hip dysplasia and hip impingement. This treatment includes the performance of specialised procedures to realign the bones around the hip (osteotomy) as an alternative to joint replacement in younger patients and he is one of only a few surgeons in the UK who has regularly performed Ganz Periacetabular Osteotomy surgery.

Clinical Interests

Mr Clayson’s clinical interests lie in adult pelvic, hip, and knee reconstructive surgery and the treatment of polytrauma patients and general lower limb orthopaedic trauma. Mr Clayson receives weekly referrals from Consultant colleagues of complex cases and operates personally on approximately 50-60 pelvic trauma cases each year. In addition to lower limb orthopaedic trauma, he also specialises in performing pelvic and acetabular osteotomies for patients born with pelvic/acetabular dysplasia together with complex hip and knee replacement surgery.

Research Interests

Mr Clayson’s clinical interests lie in Pelvic trauma, General orthopaedic trauma of lower limb and Young adult hip surgery. Beyond clinical practice, Mr Clayson is deeply committed to advancing orthopaedic care globally, particularly in low and middle-income countries. His efforts include the establishment of orthopaedic trauma services in these regions, underscoring a dedication to improving access to specialised care where it is often limited. Furthermore, he contributes to the enhancement of surgical safety practices in low and middle-income countries,

Management Experience

Mr Clayson’s extensive clinical experience has enabled him to become actively involved in clinical governance, a vital part of modern surgical practice, comprising the implementation of quality assurance processes and the maintenance of high standards in clinical practice. His expertise in this area has been recognised by him acting as an Advisor to the Department of Health on national contracts involving NHS patients receiving their treatment in independent hospitals as well as him acting as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of an Independent hospital. He has also been Clinical Director and Divisional Medical Director for orthopaedic surgery at the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust and has been a Member of the Clinical Effectiveness Committee of the Greater Manchester Major Trauma Network.
