Medico-Legal experience
Professor McCollum has a been acting as a medico-legal expert witness for over 30 years and has been the Lawyer Monthly Vascular Expert Witness of the Year for the last three consecutive years. He enjoys a very full medico-legal practice advising both Claimant and Defendant in both personal injury and clinical negligence cases. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 60/40 and he can prepare expert reports, even in complex cases, within 4-6 weeks, or sooner if required.
Clinical Practice & Experience
Professor McCollum was appointed Professor of Surgery and the Head of Academic Surgery at the University of Manchester in 1989.
Clinical Interests
Professor McCollum’s special interest is in vascular surgery, include arterial disease, carotid surgery, angioplasty, stenting, thoraco-abdominal and peri-renal aortic aneurysm, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, AAA screening, paradoxical embolism, cerebral embolism, peripheral artery disease, venous disease, varicose veins, leg ulcers, chronic wounds, pressure sores, thoracic outlet syndrome, and cervical/first rib surgery.
Research Interests
Professor McCollum’s research interests include arterial and venous thrombosis, cerebral emboli and dementia, stroke and cerebral perfusion, venous disease, carotid and extracranial artery disease, wound healing and leg ulceration, paradoxical embolism in stroke, blood transfusion therapy, ischaemic tissue injury, risk-prediction in surgery, aortic aneurysm repair, pelvic vein incompetence, indications for aortic aneurysm repair, and varicose veins.
Summary of Publications
Professor McCollum is regularly invited to give plenary lectures at national and international meetings on vascular surgery, arterial and venous disease. He is the senior author on over 420 research publications, including over 330 on original research in peer-reviewed journals. These publications include leading articles, editorials and reviews.
