The carotid arteries are two pairs of arteries which travel up the sides of the neck, delivering oxygenated blood to the brain. There is a right and left internal and external carotid artery. Carotid artery dissection in when a tear occurs in one of the carotid arteries, leading to disrupted blood supply to the brain.
