Overview

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Murray is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon with extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. He completed his surgical training in the North West of England before undertaking advanced specialist training as a Senior Clinical and Endovascular Fellow at the John Hunter Hospital in Australia. In 2010, he returned to the UK and was appointed Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he has developed extensive experience across vascular and endovascular surgery. He subsequently served for four years as Clinical Head and Greater Manchester Lead for Vascular Services, providing clinical leadership across the regional vascular service. His clinical practice encompasses the assessment and management of a broad range of arterial, venous and aortic conditions, using both open surgical and minimally invasive endovascular techniques.

Clinical Interests

His clinical interests encompass a broad range of arterial, aortic and venous conditions, with particular expertise in complex aneurysm repair, including abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms. He has a specialist interest in minimally invasive and endovascular techniques for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and other complex vascular conditions. His practice also includes the management of carotid artery disease, including carotid surgery for stroke prevention, alongside the investigation and treatment of varicose veins and venous disease. He undertakes both open and endovascular vascular procedures, including complex aneurysm repair, peripheral vascular interventions, carotid surgery and endovenous treatments.

Management Experience

Mr Murray has extensive experience in clinical leadership, governance and service development within vascular and cardiovascular surgery. From 2010 to 2018, he served as Clinical Lead for Governance within the Surgical Patient Track Board, with responsibility for clinical effectiveness and governance across the Vascular Department. His remit included complaints, serious incident and root cause investigations, safeguarding, risk management and maintenance of the departmental risk register. He also played a key role in the development of Manchester’s Complex Endovascular Aortic Programme, working with NHS England following its procurement and contributing to the successful development of the hybrid operating theatre complex at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT). He was instrumental in establishing the service and subsequently leading its clinical governance and management. Mr Murray has also served as Clinical Head of the Cardiovascular Division at Manchester Royal Infirmary, providing senior clinical leadership across cardiovascular services.

Research Interests

His research interests span vascular and endovascular surgery, with a particular focus on complex aortic aneurysm repair, vascular grafts and endovascular technologies. Mr Murray was a Clinical Research Fellow at the UK Centre for Tissue Engineering, in a post jointly funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). His MD thesis investigated the tissue engineering of autologous arterial conduits, with particular emphasis on genetic and molecular approaches to enhance ex vivo vascular graft development, including cloned growth factors and adenoviral transfection strategies. His current research includes aortic stent graft registries and aneurysm device research, reflecting his specialist clinical interest in complex aneurysm repair and endovascular aortic intervention. He has also acted as Chief Investigator for aneurysm device research and registries, contributing to the evaluation and development of technologies used in modern vascular and endovascular practice.
