Clinical Practice & Experience
Mr. John Cooper has worked full-time at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) as a qualified nurse for 33 years. During which time, he has been involved in a wide variety of ophthalmic nursing care including theatre, day case, outpatient and inpatient care. The foremost focus of his clinical experience has been in operating theatres as an oculoplastic nurse where he has experience as an anaesthetic & recovery, and scrub practitioner. John qualified as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in 2015 (Salford University) and has since been working within the ophthalmic sub-specialty of oculoplastic’s (eyelids, lacrimal system, orbit, and the external eye). This includes performing minor-ops, outpatient clinic consultations and contribute to the care of these patients (complex orbital wound care, pre and post operative care).
Mr Cooper is an experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioner (MSc, Salford), with additional qualifications as a non-medical independent and supplementary prescriber (V300) and an MRes from the University of Manchester. He performs 250–300 minor operations annually and is skilled in complex orbital wound care, having developed the MOEWAT tool. He leads the Temporal Artery Biopsy Service since 2017 and is trained in Sub-Tenon injections. His commitment to education includes roles as a practice educator and lecturer with M&K Update, alongside authoring Oculoplastic Nursing Care: Key Concepts (2020) and several peer-reviewed publications. Mr Cooper served two terms as Staff Governor (2018–2022), was a committee member of the RCN Ophthalmic Forum, and is currently Deputy Chair of AONT. He has international experience with ORBIS in Ethiopia (2012) and secured a £20k RfPB grant for qualitative research. His contributions extend to supporting nurse and medical education.
Clinical Interests
Mr Coopers primary interest will be oculoplastic nursing care especially in terms of advanced practice. He does, however, have a broad and high level of understanding and knowledge of all aspects of ophthalmology. He teaches eye anatomy and physiology both externally (for M&K Update Ltd) and internally as part of my role as education lead.
