Clinical Practice & Experience

Since 2007, Miss Lesley Watson has enjoyed working in a busy teaching department as a full-time Consultant in Emergency Medicine and has worked at the Wythenshawe Hospital since 2008. From 2012 to 2015, Wythenshawe Hospital was a Major Trauma Centre as part of the Manchester Trauma Network; during which, Miss Watson and the Emergency Department delivered rapid assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to patients with major life-threatening injuries. She also enjoys her role as Safeguarding Lead for adults within the Emergency Department, and has a special interest in the management of mental health patients, particularly by the application of the Mental Capacity Act.

Clinical Interests

Miss Watson has a subspeciality in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, for which Wythenshawe Hospital sees over 20,000 patients per year. Miss Watson sees the whole range of patients that can present to the Emergency Department, including the critically unwell patients in both the Paediatric and Adult resuscitation areas, where the ED team will resuscitate and stabilise patients before transfer for imaging or to ward areas. This often requires close working with staff from ITU and Paediatrics. Miss Watson undertakes and supervises conscious sedation and manipulation of dislocations and fractures.

As an ED consultant, much of her time is spent supervising and assisting more junior clinicians with their patients, guiding them with the more challenging diagnostic dilemmas.

Miss Watson introduced the process of rapid assessment to Wythenshawe, where an identified cohort of patients are prioritised for consultant/ senior doctor input at the point of triage – this ensures that time critical conditions are identified and treatment initiated, as soon as possible, as well as providing early imaging, investigation and analgesia.
