Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Talbot enjoys receiving instructions from both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Nick Talbot was appointed as a Consultant at University Hospitals Birmingham in August 2020. He provides anaesthesia and sedation for both elective and emergency neurosurgeries, including cranial, spinal, and interventional neuroradiological procedures. His clinical practice encompasses neurosurgical theatres, the interventional neuroradiology suite, the neuro‑intensive care unit, and general, trauma, and burns intensive care settings. He cares for the full spectrum of critically ill patients, including those with complex neurological conditions, polytrauma, burns, sepsis, ARDS, acute renal failure and poisoning.

Clinical Interests

Dr Talbot is an experienced Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) practitioner, utilising target‑controlled infusions (TCI) and processed electroencephalography (pEEG) to optimise operating conditions for cranial and spinal neurosurgery. This approach supports high‑quality multimodal intra‑operative monitoring while reducing the risk of postoperative delirium. His clinical interests centre on the management of patients with traumatic brain injury and subarachnoid haemorrhage, with a strong focus on understanding the natural history of these conditions and mitigating associated complications.

Research Interests

Dr Talbot’s research interests encompass traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, and the transition of adolescents from paediatric to adult intensive care.

Management Experience

Dr Talbot serves as the Neuro‑Intensive Care Lead for University Hospitals Birmingham, overseeing a multidisciplinary team comprising 10 intensive care consultants, 93 nurses, 11 clinical support workers, and a range of allied healthcare professionals. During his tenure, he has enhanced the capabilities of the neuro‑intensive care unit by procuring a portable CT scanner and introducing advanced monitoring modalities, including probes for measuring brain parenchymal oxygen tension.

Summary of Publications

Dr Talbot has contributed to national guidelines on the intensive‑care management of status epilepticus and has presented at the North American Brain Injury Society on neuroinflammatory pathways in moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. He has also authored articles on poor‑grade subarachnoid haemorrhage and on surge management of critical‑care resources during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

Teaching & Training

Dr Talbot is frequently invited to deliver teaching to colleagues and resident doctors on a range of neuro‑critical‑care topics, including brain monitoring, traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, neuroimaging interpretation, and the neurological criteria for death determination. He regularly contributes to Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) examination preparation courses and to simulation‑based training in emergency airway management.

Prizes and Awards

Awarded the Midlands Neuroscience Teaching and Research Fund (£10 k) for studying inflammation and epigenomics in traumatic brain injury and β‑adrenergic blockade.

Received the Midlands Society of Anaesthetists Silver Medal for peri‑operative fluid resuscitation work at SWFT.

Granted £4 k by the Jean Shanks Foundation for research on genetics and epigenetics in malignant glioma treatment.
