Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Professor George has vast medico-legal experience. He has provided expert evidence for various landmark cases that have progressed to Court in England and abroad, accepted instruction as an expert witness from the DPP, civil Claimants and for the Defence. He trained in Medical Law and Ethics at King’s. He is happy to take on cases for both the Claimant and the Defence.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Professor George initially trained in Respiratory and General Medicine in 1986. His MD on end-stage obstructive pulmonary disease and experience with adult cystic fibrosis, alongside his background in ITU Medicine has served him to become a pioneer of palliative medicine. He was the first specialist in the UK to develop and apply palliative approaches and develop services for HIV & AIDS and non-cancer palliative care. After a full and extensive clinical career, Professor George currently practices as an Independent Clinical Consultant in Palliative Medicine, and Honorary Consultant Palliative Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He is a Bioethicist & Professor of Palliative Care at King’s College London. Alongside these roles, he chairs the Specialty Certificate Examination Board for Palliative Medicine as part of the Royal College of Physicians.

Clinical Interests

Professor George is experienced and expert in palliative care for all diagnostic groups, including pioneering work on HIV & AIDS, non-cancer palliative care and frailty.

Management Experience

Professor George has held many management and leadership roles, including Medical Director at the St Christopher’s Hospice, Clinical Lead for Palliative & End of Life Care for NHS London, President of the Association for Palliative Medicine and served as an elected Councillor of the Royal College of Physicians London.

Summary of Publications

Professor George has published over 150 commissioned and peer-reviewed papers, articles and chapters. His H-Index is 23. He has dedicated much of his free time to research. Outside of aspects of palliative care, he has published on care modelling, palliative and End of Life care, ethics, advance care planning, continuity of care, risk-management and distributive justice.

Teaching & Training

Alongside his clinical practice, Professor George has worked hard to educate others. He was Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL since his first Consultant appointment in 1987 and has fulfilled many educational roles. Professor George helped develop the undergraduate curriculum in Bioethics both at UCL and at King’s where he was responsible for the teaching programme in Palliative Care on the Guy’s and St Thomas’ site until 2015. He became a Professor of Palliative Care at King’s College London in 2011. Currently, he chairs the Specialty Certificate Examination Board for Palliative Medicine as part of the Royal College of Physicians.
