Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Stephen Boyd is a consultant haematologist who currently practices at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he leads the service for red‑cell disorders and provides general haematology care. Prior to this role he divided his clinical commitments between North Middlesex University Hospital, where he served as the lead for red‑cell disorders and contributed to transfusion and haemostasis/thrombosis services, and University College London Hospital, where he continued his work in red‑cell and general haematology. Earlier, he held a consultant position at Belfast City Hospital, overseeing red‑cell disorders as the service lead and managing a broad spectrum of haematological conditions including myelodysplastic syndromes, acute leukaemia, myeloproliferative neoplasms and aplastic anaemia.

Dr Boyd specialist training in haematology was undertaken across several institutions, including Belfast City Hospital, the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, Ulster Hospital, Altnagelvin Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. Prior to specialty training, he completed core medical training in general and intensive‑care medicine at Mater Infirmorum Hospital, Altnagelvin Hospital, Ulster Hospital and South West Acute Hospital, and foundation training covering medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics and academic medicine at Altnagelvin Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and Queen’s University Belfast.

Clinical Interests

Dr Boyd’s clinical focus centres on red‑cell haematology, with particular expertise in sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, Diamond‑Blackfan anaemia, congenital dyserythropoietic anaemias and inherited red‑cell membrane disorders such as hereditary spherocytosis, elliptocytosis, pyropoikilocytosis and stomatocytosis. He also manages red‑cell enzyme deficiencies, including G6PD and pyruvate‑kinase deficiency, and addresses transfusion‑related iron overload. In the broader field of haematology, his interests encompass hereditary haemochromatosis, autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, iron‑deficiency states and the diagnostic work‑up of diverse haematological abnormalities (anaemia, polycythaemia, thrombocytopaenia, thrombocytosis, neutropenia and neutrophilia). He is actively involved in the evaluation of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential and other emerging haematological entities.

Research Interests

His research agenda is devoted to red‑cell haematology, exploring novel therapeutic approaches, disease mechanisms and translational applications relevant to inherited and acquired red‑cell disorders.

Management Experience

Dr Boyd leads the specialist haemoglobinopathy multidisciplinary team at Manchester Royal Infirmary and, on an interim basis, coordinates the regional North‑West England Sickle Cell Haemoglobinopathy Centre. He previously served as the red‑cell lead at North Middlesex University Hospital and at Belfast City Hospital, overseeing service development, pathway optimisation and audit activities within those institutions.

Summary of Publications

Dr Boyd’s scholarly contributions include a poster on the role of liver biopsy in adult transfusion‑dependent thalassaemia undergoing gene therapy or HSCT presented at the 20th Annual Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Conference, a peer‑reviewed article on expanded eligibility for emerging sickle‑cell therapies in the British Journal of Haematology, and an e‑poster detailing the use of CPX‑351 in acute myeloid leukaemia. Additional abstracts have addressed the introduction of sickle‑haemoglobin screening in Northern Ireland, an audit of venous‑thromboembolism management in thrombocytopenic haematology patients, and a clinical case of massive haemoptysis presented at the British Thoracic Society meeting.
