Clinical Practice & Experience
Dr Wilkinson graduated from the University of Leicester in 2003, before going on to specialise in Paediatrics and Respiratory Medicine. He trained across northern hospitals, including Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Currently, Dr Wilkinson works at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) as the Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician. As part of his post, he has also taken on the responsibility of Clinical Lead for Long Term Ventilation and the Clinical Lead for Respiratory Paediatrics.
Clinical Interests
Dr Wilkinson’s speciality is respiratory paediatrics. Before taking on his current post at RMCH, he spent two years as a Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Fellow. He is passionate about supporting ventilator dependent children and leads the regional neonatal/respiratory forum, and has special interests in long term ventilation, cystic fibrosis, severe asthma, sleep disordered breathing, and tertiary respiratory paediatric medicine.
Management Experience
As part of his medical career, Dr Wilkinson has taken on many management roles. These include Chair and Lead National LTV Advisory Group across the UK (2021), Chair and Lead Regional Neonatal CLD Forum.
Research Interests
Whilst working on his MD post-graduate research, Dr Wilkinson looked into fungal diseases in cystic fibrosis. His most recent research has been ‘Parrot Trail PI: Use of Azithromycin Prophylaxis in Cerebral Palsy’ (2022) and ‘Pulmonary Function Changes in Mucopolysaccharidoses IV: A Longitudinal Analysis’ (2018).

Dr Wilkinson is widely published. Recent works have included;
2021: Problems and perceptions around severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Infant journal: 17(5).
2021: Pulmonary manifestations of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases in Children” in Pulmonary Manifestations of Paediatric Diseases, Elsevier.
2020: NCEPOD report into Long Term Ventilation in children and young people: case reviewer.
2020: Characterisation of tracheobronchomalacia in infants with hypophosphatasia in Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases.
Teaching & Training
At the RMCH, Dr Wilkinson is involved in post-graduate supervision and specialist respiratory training, and he is part of the medical education committee for paediatrics.
