Mr Mark Welch is a highly experienced Consultant Vascular Surgeon who has been in clinical practice since qualifying in 1984. He has held a consultant post for over 20 years and is a recognised expert in complex vascular trauma.
On 22nd May 2017, Mr Welch was the on-call vascular surgeon at Wythenshawe Hospital following the Manchester Arena bombing. He led the vascular surgical management of several casualties, including Mrs Lisa Roussos, who sustained multiple penetrating injuries. Her left leg was at risk due to a severed artery. Mr Welch performed a six-hour operation that included a reverse vein graft to restore arterial flow and preserve the limb.
The procedure, which involved harvesting and inverting a segment of vein from the same leg, was critical to avoiding amputation. The surgery was conducted under major incident conditions, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
Mr Welch’s role in the emergency response illustrates his expertise in high-pressure, complex trauma cases. He continues to practise as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and provides expert witness services through McCollum Consultants, with particular experience in major trauma, vascular injury, and limb salvage surgery.
