Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Mr Pickersgill has been providing medico-legal advice for a number of years. He has undergone his expert witness training. He is registered with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. Mr Pickersgill enjoys a full medico-legal practice instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in actions relating to personal injury and clinical negligence. Mr Pickersgill holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester, but is happy to travel in order to conduct home and prison visits. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 60/40 and he can usually turnaround reports within 14-16 weeks

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Pickersgill qualified as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2000 at the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. Since August 2015, he has practiced as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Wythenshawe Hospital, part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Mr Pickersgill holds regular NHS operating lists and weekly gynaecology clinics and antenatal clinics. He is frequently asked to see patients as tertiary referrals and takes part in the labour ward sessions during resident and on-call duties. Recently, Mr Pickersgill has been elected as the Fellow’s representative for the North West on the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Council.

Clinical Interests

Mr Pickersgill has a range of interests within gynaecology and obstetrics including: adolescent gynaecology, assisted conception, endometriosis, fibroids, infertility, keyhole hysterectomies, the menopause, menstrual disorders, miscarriage, post-natal depression, prolapse, and reproductive health. He has a special clinical interest in early pregnancy complications (having previously set up early pregnancy assessment units in two hospitals), ovarian cysts, and polycystic ovaries.

Research Interests

Mr Pickersgill has a research interest in minimal access surgery for a wide range of gynaecological disorders, particularly advanced laparoscopic surgery for conditions such as endometriosis and fibroids. With a background in infertility, working within in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and reproductive medicine, he is particularly interested in keyhole surgery for people with fertility problems.

Summary of Publications

Mr Pickersgill has written textbooks for doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology and has participated in the development of other educational resources for patients and students. He has published a number of books, authored reports and teaching aids, and has published consent advice. He is often invited to lecture at local and national scientific meetings and has been involved in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) to review service as a Lead Assessor conducting visits to NHS and private hospitals.

Teaching & Training

Mr Pickersgill has written four books suitable for the RCOG membership examination and has extensive experience in the development and teaching of laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery using minimal access techniques; he currently teaches advanced keyhole surgery at the University of Surrey and is the Benign Gynaecology Advanced Training Skills Modules (ATSM) for the North West Region, regularly teaching a porcine laparoscopic course in Chorley. He has led the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes at the Salford Royal Hospital and has been responsible for overseeing the training of 16 junior doctors at the Wythenshawe Hospital and arranging medical student teaching.
