Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Elledge holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon (CUBS) Expert Witness Certificate in Criminal Law. He readily accepts criminal instructions and, drawing on his clinical experience, advises both claimant and defendant firms on personal‑injury and clinical‑negligence matters in civil litigation. His combined surgical expertise and formal expert‑witness training make him a trusted medico‑legal consultant across criminal and civil cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Ross Elledge has been a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust since December 2018, where he provides a full spectrum of oral and maxillofacial services to both elective and emergency patients. In addition to his NHS duties, he holds an honorary appointment as Senior Clinical Lecturer in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham (appointed February 2016), contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate curricula while maintaining an active clinical caseload. Since October 2020 he has also served as an Honorary Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, extending his expertise to a wider regional population.

Beyond his NHS commitments, Mr Elledge has cultivated a parallel practice in the independent sector. He has been a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Ramsay Health’s Westbourne Centre since September 2020, at Spire Parkway Hospital, Solihull since November 2020, and at Circle Health’s The Priory Hospital, Edgbaston since March 2022. Most recently, in March 2024 he joined The Harborne Hospital (part of HCA Healthcare UK, Birmingham) as a consultant, further broadening his reach across private surgical services. These concurrent roles enable him to deliver high‑complexity procedures, such as temporomandibular joint arthroscopy and alloplastic joint replacement, to a diverse patient base while fostering cross‑sector collaboration and knowledge transfer.

Clinical Interests

Mr Elledge’s clinical portfolio is distinguished by a subspecialty focus on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery. He routinely performs advanced arthroscopy and total alloplastic TMJ replacement—a service offered by only a handful of surgeons nationwide. His expertise in TMJ pathology encompasses both diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and he actively contributes to the development of national guidelines for TMJ management. In parallel, Mr Elledge is a dedicated member of the Solihull Hospital Local Skin Cancer Multi‑Disciplinary Team, where he applies his surgical skill set to the excision and reconstruction of cutaneous malignancies, ensuring comprehensive oncologic care.

In addition to these subspecialties, Mr Elledge maintains a robust general Oral and Maxillofacial practice. He provides routine dento‑alveolar surgery and facial trauma management, and he fulfills on‑call responsibilities for the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. This role encompasses the acute care of both civilian and military casualties, requiring rapid decision‑making and coordination with multidisciplinary emergency teams. His broad remit ensures that he remains proficient across the full spectrum of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, while his subspecialist interests keep him at the forefront of emerging surgical techniques.

Research Interests

Mr Elledge’s research agenda spans clinical, educational, and ethical domains. Recent projects have examined postgraduate training in TMJ surgery, the design and assessment of virtual learning environments (VLEs) for postgraduate education, and the restructuring of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training during the COVID‑19 pandemic. He has also led a Delphi study to identify variables for a clinical predictor rule for facial fractures on plain‑film radiographs, and explored the relevance of Aristotelian ethics in surgical education. He holds a Master of Medical Education (MMedEd) from the Centre for Medical Education at the University of Dundee and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) by research at the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, University of Birmingham. As Chief Investigator of the Birmingham Mandible and Midface (BruMM) Rules study, Mr Elledge is developing a clinical predictor rule to reduce unnecessary radiographic imaging in trauma patients, thereby lowering radiation exposure and NHS costs.

Management Experience

Within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Mr Elledge previously served as Deputy Clinical Service Lead for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, overseeing service delivery, pathway optimisation, and quality‑improvement initiatives. He currently holds the position of Clinical Service Lead for Day Surgery, directing day‑case activity, managing theatre utilisation, and championing patient‑centred care pathways across the trust. Externally, he acts as the Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST) Mohs Surgery TIG representative to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialty Advisory Committee, providing strategic input on training standards and curriculum development. Mr Elledge also fulfills the role of Assigned Educational Supervisor and sits on the West Midlands regional Specialty Training Committee, contributing to the selection, assessment, and progression of trainees within the specialty. In addition to his clinical and educational leadership, Mr Elledge serves as an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where he oversees peer‑review processes, commissions articles, and ensures the journal’s scientific rigour.

Teaching & Training

Mr Elledge’s academic appointment as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham underpins a broad teaching portfolio. He coordinates the Human Diseases module for the undergraduate Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme, ensuring that future dentists acquire a comprehensive understanding of infection, pathology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery, and therapeutics. He also provides quality assurance as an External Examiner for the Bristol Dental School (University of Bristol) and the School of Clinical Dentistry (University of Sheffield) for the 2022/23–2026/27 academic cycles. Beyond curriculum design, Mr Elledge acts as a Senior Academic Tutor and Personal Mentor for undergraduate medical students, participates in admissions interview panels, and serves on exam boards. He previously held the role of Regional Education Lead for the West Midlands higher surgical trainees in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where he helped establish a VLE during the COVID‑19 pandemic and published trainee feedback in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Nationally, he regularly lectures on the DePuy Synthes FRCS(OMFS) Revision Course and the BAOMS Flex FACS programme, delivering advanced training to senior surgical trainees.
