Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Das has completed Bond‑Solon training in “Excellence in Report Writing” and “Introduction to Civil Procedure Rules,” and attended the Medico‑Legal Experts Training Day (NRC Medical Experts, London, March 2026) and the Specialist Info Medicolegal Conference in London, May 2026. He currently serves as a clinical negligence case reviewer for the General Medical Council, evaluating adult and paediatric anaesthesia claims, and has produced investigative reports for a major healthcare providers. He accepts instructions in clinical negligence matters for both claimants and defendants, applying his clinical expertise to complex medico‑legal assessments.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Sumit Das has been an NHS Consultant Anaesthetist at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford since 2006. In this capacity he delivers comprehensive peri‑operative care for both children and adults across all surgical specialties, with a particular focus on complex craniofacial procedures. His day‑to‑day responsibilities include pre‑assessment, intra‑operative anaesthetic management, and postoperative pain optimisation, employing multimodal techniques and advanced monitoring to ensure patient safety.

In addition to his NHS duties, Dr Das maintains a thriving private practice. He provides paediatric and adult anaesthetic services at The Nuffield Manor Hospital, Oxford, and adult anaesthesia at The Ridgeway Hospital, Wiltshire. This dual‑sector experience broadens his exposure to a wide spectrum of cases, ranging from elective cosmetic surgery to high‑risk oncologic resections, and reinforces his commitment to delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care in both public and private settings. Prior to his consultant appointment, he completed a one‑year Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, where he honed his skills in the anaesthetic management of complex paediatric surgical pathology.

Clinical Interests

Dr Das’s clinical interests centre on paediatric anaesthesia, with a special enthusiasm for craniofacial surgery. He routinely manages the airway and haemodynamic challenges inherent in reconstructive procedures, utilising total‑intravenous anaesthesia, regional blocks and meticulous fluid balance to support optimal surgical outcomes. His interest also extends to paediatric neurosurgery and interventional radiology, where he applies specialised monitoring and analgesic strategies.

Within adult practice, Dr Das focuses on anaesthesia for cosmetic, ophthalmic and ENT surgery. He favours techniques that promote rapid recovery and minimal postoperative discomfort, such as nerve blocks and short‑acting agents. Across both patient groups, his practice is guided by evidence‑based protocols and a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach.

Research Interests

His research agenda concentrates on anaesthetic management for craniofacial surgery, aiming to refine intra‑operative haemodynamic control, reduce blood loss and accelerate postoperative recovery. He collaborates with surgical colleagues on prospective studies and presents findings at international conferences.

Management Experience

Dr Das served 3½ years as Clinical Lead for Paediatric Anaesthesia at Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust, where he introduced quality‑improvement programmes that lowered complication rates. He has been Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee at The Nuffield Manor Hospital for six years, overseeing clinical governance, policy development and accreditation processes. He is Immediate Past Secretary and President‑Elect of APAGBI and sits on expert advisory groups for paediatrics, theatres/HSSU and the National Medical Advisory Group for Nuffield Health.

Summary of Publications

Dr Das has contributed extensively to the development of national paediatric anaesthesia standards, authoring two published guidelines and serving as an advisory member on three additional guideline projects that are currently being drafted. His work includes the 2023 Chapter 14 “Guidelines for the provision of neuro‑anaesthetic services” within the GPAS framework, and advisory roles for the British Association of Perinatal Medicine’s Neonatal Airway Safety Standard (2024), Central Venous Catheter Review (2025) and the emergency‑management guideline for button‑battery ingestion in infants (2026). In the peer‑reviewed literature, Dr Das is listed on eight journal articles that span peri‑operative safety, airway management, and the anaesthetic care of children with craniosynostosis. Notable contributions include a 2024 multicentre European study proposing a standard operating procedure for peri‑operative airway management after mid‑face surgery in syndromic craniosynostosis (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery); a 2020 case series on central retinal artery occlusion following prone transcranial surgery for craniosynostosis (J Craniofacial Surgery); and two widely cited reviews on anaesthesia for craniosynostosis surgery (Pediatric Anesthesia, 2012‑2013). Additional publications cover blood‑component usage guidelines (Anaesthesia, 2025), postoperative hypo‑albuminemia after craniosynostosis surgery (Pediatric Anesthesia, 2015), and several editorials and trainee‑focused pieces that address educational technology and the lived experience of anaesthetic trainees. A complete list of Dr Das’s publications can be provided on request.

Teaching & Training

Dr Das is actively involved in postgraduate education, regularly delivering teaching sessions on airway management, paediatric pharmacology and peri‑operative risk assessment while supervising anaesthetic trainees. He has a longstanding interest in online education, designing and delivering digital learning modules for a wide audience. As past co‑director of the MEPA (Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia) simulation course, he oversaw curriculum development, faculty training and assessment of trainees and Consultants. In addition, he served as Education Editor for the journal Pediatric Anesthesia, curating educational content and guiding the publication’s education strategy, thereby shaping the next generation of clinicians in paediatric anaesthesia.
