Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr McLoughlin has been acting as an expert witness for two year and has undergone expert witness training. He enjoys a full medico-legal practice instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. Dr McLoughlin has given evidence in Court.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr McLoughlin obtained his undergraduate degree in Natural Environmental Sciences from the University of Sheffield in 2004 and went on to gain his MBChB Medicine also at the University of Sheffield by 2010. Following this, Dr McLoughlin underwent further training in London and the North West of England whilst completing his MRCEM and FRCEM. He was appointed a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in 2018. In 2020, Dr McLoughlin gained an advanced diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Dr McLoughlin has vast experience dealing with musculoskeletal injuries having previously worked as a doctor with professional sports teams and international tournaments.

Clinical Interests

Dr McLoughlin has clinical interests in areas such as: all aspects of emergency care, acute care, musculoskeletal injuries, trauma and psychology.

Research Interests

Dr McLoughlin’s areas of interest in research include traumatic brain injuries, concussion, sepsis and emergency medicine diagnostics, he has recently set up a departmental Academic Unit across 2 hospitals in the Trust and is currently a Principal Investigator on several national research trials.

Management Experience

Dr McLoughlin was the Lead on the Divisional Wellness Initiative for the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) Acute Care and Emergency Division from 2019 to 2021. He is currently the Emergency Department Sepsis Lead, driving improvements in this area from 2021. Upon completing the National Institute of Healthcare Research Scholarship, he was appointed as the Deputy Director of Research for the Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust in 2022.

Summary of Publications

Dr McLoughlin has contributed to varies research studies and has written number of publications in academic journals and books. Dr McLoughlin has also contributed to a White Paper for the Government regarding the mental health of patients and staff during the COVID pandemic.

Teaching & Training

Dr McLoughlin is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. He was also the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Education Lead for the Emergency Department from 2018-2021. He also supervises 6-8 junior doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and students. He is Medical Director on the Resus Council Advanced Life Support course and an instructor on the Advanced Paediatric Life Support course plus the Royal College of Surgeons of England Prehospital Emergency Resuscitative Thoracotomy course. He is also a LUHFT Trust appraiser.
